Snowmobile Holidays: Where adventure and freedom are still limitless

Snowmobile vacations Finland, Lapland

Snowmobiles are the jet skis in the snow. They can be driven at 100 km/h through the snowy landscape - what a lot of fun! But in Central Europe and Switzerland, the use and application of snowmobiles are so restricted and over-regulated that there can hardly be any talk of fun. Even snowmobile vacations, you can not really in Europe. Whether in Switzerland, Italy or Austria. Everywhere there are limited circuits and small areas for use, but real adventure and safaris can only be experienced in the free, boundless nature without prohibition signs and regulations.

If you want to go on a real snowmobile trip through snowy landscapes, you have to go a certain distance to find suitable regions outside of Central Europe, otherwise it will remain small and staid. And even if the Corona pandemic significantly restricts international travel, this will certainly not be forever. We have looked around and identified various territories on our globe that are suitable for a real snowmobile vacation including freedom and adventure feeling.

Lapland
Northern Finland is sparsely populated and in winter covered with snow-covered landscapes as far as the eye can see. And by sparsely populated, I mean with a national area of 100,000 km2, i.e. 2.5 times the size of Switzerland, only 180,000 inhabitants and not 8.5 million as currently in Switzerland. This means that Lapland is about 120 times less populated than Switzerland. What a blessing! many will now think. The beauty of Lapland, and by that I don't just mean the northern lights, but above all vast areas of untouched nature, attracts many tourists to the country. Seeing the fir trees covered with snow in a huge sea of snow, every nature and winter lover is fully impressed. Endless expanses of untouched snowy landscape, that is Lapland. With snowmobiles you can make wonderful tours in the icy north. The vehicle is with the natives anyway the means of transport par excellence, if one must move on snow. Even the farmer who has to feed his reindeer takes the snowmobile, what else. Wading through the snow is not, that would take days. Unsuspecting and dreamers be warned, in winter the temperatures range between O and minus 40 degrees Celsius. So it's not for fast foodies! A well warming clothing is therefore absolutely duty and is often included in the travel package. Numerous adventure travel providers have entire portfolios of snowmobile day trips, safaris and multi-day tours. The top marks in comments are pouring in - they can't all be fake comments. The adventure is exhilarating and really drives in. And you just don't get that in Central Europe. Newcomers, however, must first learn to cope and handle the snowmobile in the snow and this is not so easy, especially in the wild. Who decides where you go, the driver, the steering wheel or the existing track in the snow? At speed, this can often lead to speeding into the trees and colliding with a fir tree instead of staying on the track. Then it's good not to be alone and to be supported by an experienced guide who knows how to help technically and is very familiar with the region. You also need to know where to get a bite and where to refuel. Good organized tours are therefore the tried and tested means in the foreign country. Nature lovers and individualists will love it.

Iceland
The small island between Greenland and Scandinavia has 364,000 inhabitants at around 100,000 km2 and is thus theoretically twice as populated as Lapland, but the majority of the inhabitants live in the capital Rekjavik. Iceland is not a typical hotspot for snowmobile tours, but stands for auroras, a visit to the blue lagoon or whale watching. But in the offer are from specialized also great snowmobile tours e.g. from Rekjavik e.g. in connection with the inspection of a natural ice cave. So if you don't feel like going to Scandinavia, you should just check it out.

Greenland
Of course, if you like it icy, you can consider a trip to Greenland. Greenland brings to mind ice, walruses, polar bears, whales in the Arctic Ocean, icebergs and, above all, adventurous excursions. With an area of over 2 million km2, it is one of the largest countries in the world and three times larger than France, but there are just 55,000 inhabitants living on the island. The largest island in the world was once a Danish colony, but since 2009 it has been strongly self-governing. There are no roads between the individual towns. Therefore, to get to the next town, you have to get comfortable by boat, plane, dog sled or snowmobile. The huge country is made for outdoor adventures, even if tourists first think of whaling, icebergs, fjords or the midnight sun when they think of Greenland. The snowmobile is to Greenland what a car or bicycle is to Europe. If you have to go to work or go hunting, you hop on a snowmobile and off you go. This is nothing special. Nevertheless, only a few tour operators can be found; the destination seems too exotic or too icy and remote.

USA
Of course, when it comes to snowmobile vacations, a look across the pond must be dared and done. The USA has numerous snowmobile hotspots to offer, which are marketed for tourism or which have a well-developed and maintained trail network due to the local clubs. It can happen that such a community counts 4000 members. So you are not riding in a small group through a completely deserted snow desert, but on an adventure trail that is maintained by the local people. Beautiful lodges provide a comfortable stay and great food. For example, Togwotee Mountain Lodge in Moran, in the state of Wyoming, is one such address, sometimes offering snowmobile tours and rentals. The Bridger-Teton National Forest, between Yellowstone National Park to the north and Grand Teton National Park to the south, offers 600 miles of great trails. Therefore, as one of the many destinations that are frequently mentioned, Yellowstone National Park will certainly be on the list. Here tours are offered and here you afford to race with the bison. Everything in the north of America, be it Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, South Dakota with the famous Black Hills (Sioux Indians) or North Dakota are territories for winter sports, snow and snowmobiling. Idaho is reported to have over 11,000 km of groomed trails waiting for snowmobile adventurers. Typical of America, the choice here is simply too great. The state of Maine boasts thousands of miles of interconnected trail network, West Yellowstone, Priest Lake in Idaho, Vail in Colorado, Eagle River in Wisconsin, which calls itself the snowmobile capital of the world, and rather an exception Chugach State Park in Alaska are some of these good addresses when it comes to unique snowmobile vacations.

As you can see, if you go far away, you will quickly find what you are looking for and experience real snowmobile vacations and adventures, but this also requires freedom and size, which you won't find anywhere in small Europe. You have to search a bit and the organization costs time, but you will find destinations that are more than worth the trip. Snowmobilers want to have fun, experience nature and freedom and the more the better.
