Formula 1 - Monaco Grand Prix 2014

Nico Rosberg won for the second time in Monaco and is thus once again the leader of the world championship. The Silver Arrows also shone with outstanding performance in the most spectacular race of the season. Of 22 starting cars, 14 finished. Former world champion Sebastian Vettel was one of the unlucky drivers and retired.

by Bruno Fleckenstein

Pastor Maldonado (Lotus) stopped on the formation lap and had to start from the pit lane together with Marcus Ericsson (Caterham).
Rosberg and Hamilton got off to a good start. But the high-flyer was Kimi Raikkonen, who shot past Fernando Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo to take third place. Alonso followed suit. Sergio Perez was the first unlucky driver this Sunday. He was touched by Kevin Magnusson in the Mirabeau corner, spun and came to a stop across the track. The Mexican's retirement meant safety car for the other drivers as early as the first lap.
On lap 4, the competitors passed Sebastian Vettel almost unhindered. He then pitted, but failed to fully fix the problems. As soon as he left the pits, he was only able to drive in first gear and was asked to drive the Red Bull back to the pits on lap 7. The race was over for him after that.

2.safety car phase shuffled the positions anew
The Mercedes drivers pulled away and the field of drivers stretched out. On lap 24, they lapped Romain Grosjean and Marcus Ericsson, who were 17th and 18th respectively. One lap later Adrian Sutil overestimated himself and lost control of his Sauber after the tunnel, similar to Daniil Kvyat in qualifying. Parts lay scattered on the ground and this heralded the second safety car phase.

Almost all the drivers then changed tires, except Felipe Massa. Hamilton was told over the radio that this had been the last pit stop. Kimi Räikkönen was the unlucky one in this phase because his fresh tires were damaged by carbon parts and he immediately had to change tires again, which cost him many places.

The second restart after the safety car period began on lap 30. Behind Rosberg, Hamilton, Ricciardo and Alonso, Massa now improved to 5th and Magnusson to 6th. Vergne took 7th place, Hülkenberg 8th,Button 9th and Bottas 10th. Räikkönen had dropped back to 13th place.
Rosberg set the fastest lap on lap 35. Vergne collected a drive-through penalty and then dropped back to 13th place. Rosberg was instructed to be more economical with the fuel on lap 40.

Felipe Massa came in for his pit stop on lap 46 and dropped back to 11th place and was thus out of the points. Four laps later, Nico Rosberg was informed that the fuel quota was again up to scratch and that he did not need to save any more fuel.

Positions on lap 51: 1st Rosberg, 2nd Hamilton, 3rd Ricciardo +15.5sec, 4th Alonso +18.1sec, 5th Hülkenberg +39.1sec, 6th Magnusson + 43.6sec, 7th Button + 46.3sec, 8th Bottas, 9th Gutiérrez 10th Raikkonen.
Bottas, Gutiérrez, Raikkonen and Massa were close behind.

Unforeseen failures and self-accidents contributed to a mixed final result
The Williams of Valtteri Bottas began to smoke at the Mirabeau turn on lap 57 and he stopped in the hairpin "Loews" with engine failure. The fight became harder , which led to the misjudgement of Esteban Gutiérrez. He touched the Rascasse corner with his right rear wheel on lap 63, spun and stopped with a flat tire. That meant double retirement for Sauber, although it smelled like points.

On lap 66, Lewis Hamilton startled his crew by telling them he had something in his left eye. Nico Rosberg increased his gap to Hamilton at this stage and Daniel Ricciardo came threateningly closer to Hamilton. Red Bull told Ricciardo on lap 72 that he could still catch Hamilton and he then set the fastest lap of 1.19.252 (No comparison to qualifying times).
On lap 74, Jenson Button on McLaren passed his stablemate Kevin Magnusson. Kimi Räikkönen tried to do the same in the hairpin after Mirabeau, but there wasn't enough steering angle and the Ferrari and McLaren came to a standstill in the corner. Only reverse gear helped.

This mishap helped Jules Bianchi to finish in the points for the first time. Räikkönen was allowed to pit again for this and thus certainly bid farewell to the points.
A few laps later, Nico Rosberg crossed the finish line as the winner. Lewis Hamilton was under pressure from Daniel Ricciardo, but the latter was unable to challenge him for second place and finished third behind Hamilton for the second time after Spain.
