AXA Sports Equipment & Bike Insurance - what's the big deal?

During my daily research on the subject of sports on the Internet, I happened to come across this thing: "AXA Sports Equipment & Bike Insurance". What is that? Never heard of it before. Sounds like something cool that could be really interesting for our readers. An insurance that specifically covers the needs of sports enthusiasts is really suitable for our core readers. Here's the most important info I found on it.

While a soccer player can get by with suitable footwear and a ball and thus has to make a small investment for his hobby, other sports require high-priced equipment. And if the expensive mountain bike is damaged in a fall, it is not least a financial question whether there will be a longer break from sports. Sports equipment insurance such as that offered by AXA protects bikes, wakeboards, climbing equipment and the like against any damage. But for whom is such insurance worthwhile? And what should athletes look out for when taking out insurance?

The sports equipment and bicycle insurance of AXA

You don't necessarily have to be a sports professional to own expensive sports equipment. High-quality sports equipment, e-bikes, mountain bikes, racing bikes and skis are often correspondingly expensive. And if several people with different favorite sports live under one roof, it can add up to quite a bit. But especially when the sports equipment not only for the sake of a good resolution but are actually used often and regularly, they can quickly become damaged, stolen or lost. In such cases the sports equipment and bicycle insurance of the AXA on.

The AXA offer at a glance

The following damage is insured under AXA's sports equipment and bicycle insurance:

  • Loss of sports equipmentWhile skiing you had a fall and one of your skis disappeared down a slope never to be seen again? In such a case, the sports equipment insurance takes effect.
  • Unforeseen, sudden damage: After a Bicycle crash is the frame of the racing bike broken? Or a stone breaks the snowboard in two. In such cases, the insurance will step in.
  • Theft on the roadThe classic - the e-bike was just parked in front of the ice cream parlor, but when you come out again, only the cut lock is left in front of the store door. AXA sports equipment insurance also covers theft.

With AXA sports equipment insurance, newly purchased bicycles and sports equipment are automatically covered. No new policy has to be taken out, if necessary the 1st risk sum has to be adjusted.

Isn't homeowner's insurance enough?

That sounds all well and good. But another insurance policy? Isn't there the possibility of including the sports equipment in another insurance policy - for example, in the household insurance? As a rule, household insurance protects belongings in the event of damage caused by fire, tap water, storm and hail, robbery, burglary and vandalism in connection with burglary. In this sense, household insurance can also cover damage or theft to sports equipment and bicycles. Because as a rule of thumb, anything that can be taken with you when you move can be covered by household insurance. However, household insurance will cover damage to insured items in the house or apartment or any associated outbuildings such as a garage or workshop. If no away-from-home coverage was insured and then a bicycle is stolen while on the road, this is not a case for homeowner's insurance. However, insurers usually offer an extension of the household insurance, under which items can be covered outside the home for a certain period of time.

However, there remains a crucial difference to sports equipment insurance. This is because self-inflicted damage (damage) is excluded from household insurance. If a snowboard breaks while being ridden, the household insurance does not cover the damage - the sports equipment insurance does.

What sports equipment is insured

AXA's sports equipment insurance protects all bicycles and sports equipment in your own household: your own as well as those of your partner, children, other family members or flatmates. Among others, the following are insured:

  • E-bike (battery and display are also insured), racing bike or moped (including helmet)
  • Electric scooter, Segway
  • Surfboard or SUP
  • Ski and snowboard (helmet included)
  • Paraglider
  • Golf equipment
  • Climbing equipment
  • Home trainer

What is not insured?

Sportswear such as ski suits, bike outfits or sports shoes are not included in the scope of insurance. Devices for measuring athletic performance are also not covered by the insurance.

When does sports equipment insurance make sense?

Sports equipment insurance covers damage to sports equipment at home, on the road and during sports itself - with the exception of damage that usually occurs during a sports competition. The main factor here is that the insurance covers the equipment regardless of whether the damage was self-inflicted. Other insurances do not apply here.

Therefore, sports equipment insurance can be worthwhile when one or more Sports with expensive sports equipment are practiced regularly and you are also on the road a lot with the sports equipment.

Or to put it another way: the expensive rowing machine at home can also simply be included in the household insurance. It stays in place and damage to the machine while exercising is unlikely and if so, more likely warranty cases or wear and tear. Both cases are also not covered by sports equipment insurance. If you have invested several thousand Euros for your equipment as a kitesurfer and are on the beaches of this world with it, you can benefit from a sports equipment insurance. This is especially true if you have saved for a long time for the sports equipment and a replacement cannot even be financed out of petty cash and, if necessary, a long break from sports would have to be accepted until new equipment could be paid for out of your own pocket.

Basically, sports equipment insurance can pay for itself in the following sports:

  • Cycling
  • Water sports
  • Winter sports
  • Aviation
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Fishing
  • Climbing

The AXA sports equipment & bike insurance is a real alternative to conventional insurances that cleverly protects people who are active in sports from major damage during their leisure activities. Anyone who frequently plays sports and spends money accordingly should take a closer look. For many active sportspeople, this is a real alternative. In this case, I have not (yet) investigated whether there are other providers. That could be the topic for a follow-up article. Interested?
