Zan Kranjec wins the giant slalom in Adelboden

The men's alpine skiing giant slalom in Adelboden is a highlight in the World Cup program and could be held today in bright weather and on an excellent slope. But big favorites stumbled and in the end the outcome of the race was a big surprise.

In the first run, the favorites could not fully convince even in excellent conditions. Alexis Pinturault, weakened by flu, was in 11th place, Henrik Kristofferson one place ahead of the Frenchman. Loic Meillard was the only one of the top seven group who could convince and was third after the first run. The Italian Luca de Aliprandini's run was then very strong and he took the lead with his committed driving style. That his compatriot Giovanni Borsotti, who started the race with start number 53, finished the first run in second place was a surprise.

In the second run, the slope became a bit shadier and the course was set more technically demanding. Austrian Roland Leitinger was in 27th place after the first run and put in a sensational second run, especially in the final section, making up a remarkable 21 places. Alexander Aamot Kilde proved with his performance that he has become an excellent all-rounder. From 16th place he made it to fifth after the second run. The Frenchman Victor Muffat-Jeandet, who started after him, was two hundredths faster than the Norwegian and shared the podium with Henrik Kristoffersen, who was not so aggressive in the second run. Lucas Braathen and the up to then best German skier Alexander Schmid lost too much time especially in the lower part of the course and dropped back.

Then Croatian Filip Zubcic started his second run and drove fully at the limit from the beginning and kept up this driving style until the end, which catapulted him to the top. After that it was Zan Kranjec's turn. The Slovenian added another notch to Zubcic and had extended his lead to almost seven tenths by the third intermediate time. Even though he struggled to stay on track on the final slope, he still took the lead.

After him started Mathieu Faivre (FRA), who skied too cautiously, Erik Read (CAN), who already struggled at the first gates and the Swiss hope Loic Meillard, who simply lacked aggressiveness or the will to win, which is why the three had nothing to do with the podium places.

Giovanni Borsotti, who then tackled the second run, seemed to be a bit over-motivated and did not ride as smoothly as in the first run. Rank 14 in the final classification is nevertheless a remarkable result.

Then it was time for the best of the first run, Luca de Aliprandini. Would the Italian be able to celebrate his first World Cup victory in a Giant Slalom? After the first gates, everything seemed to go like clockwork and Luca increased his lead to three tenths by the second intermediate time. But after that he made an inside ski mistake in a subsequent right-hand turn and was unfortunate to drop out. That was bitter for him. But this in turn meant victory for Zan Kranjec in the Giant Slalom in Adelboden.
