Noah Lyles (USA) wins the 100 m race at the 2023 World Championships in Athletics in Budapest ahead of Letsile Tebogo and Zharnel Hughes. Last year's world champion Fred Kerley was eliminated in the semi-finals.
The men's 100 m final is the highlight of the World Championships in Athletics, including this one in Budapest in 2023. Many well-known names competed in it, such as the reigning world champion Fred Kerley, the former world champion Christian Coleman, the African super runner Ferdinand Omanyala, the fastest man from South Africa Akani Simbine, the super-fast 200 m man Noah Lyes from the USA or the young super talent Oblique Seville from Jamaica, who already attracted attention at the last World Championships.
After the heats, exactly these runners crystallized as favorites. Now they had to prove themselves in the semifinals. Akani Simbine made a mistake and was disqualified. Noah Lyles (USA) was the fastest with a time of 9.87 seconds. The fact that Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs did not make it into the final with 10.05 seconds surprised only a few, as he had not been able to repeat his brilliant time since the Olympics. But the fact that top favorite Fred Kerley (USA) crossed the finish line with only 10.02 seconds was astonishing. Result: Kerley was eliminated and did not take part in the 100 m final.
Lyles, Coleman, Seville, Hughes, Omanyala, Sani Brown, Tebogo and Forde were in the final. Noah Lyles was the top favorite due to his consistently good runs. The race was started. christian Coleman took a clear lead. Should the veteran make it to the finish and take the title. But Hughes, Tebogo, Seville and Sani Brown closed up and right gave Lyles. Don't forget: Noah Lyles is actually a 200m man. It takes a while for the turbo to ignite in his case, but then it does so powerfully. And indeed Noah Lyles started to pull away a bit on the right side, the field otherwise very tight and closed. In the end, the winner Noah Lyles (USA) shot through the finish line first closely followed by Tebogo, Hughes and Seville. This was a very close race, so we had to wait for the results to know who had won a medal. Places 2 - 4 went to Tebogo, Hughes and Seville with a time of 9.88 seconds, differing only by thousandths of a second. It's been a long time since you've seen such a cohesive 100m race at a World Championships. Noah Lyles is happy about his first World Championship title in the 100 m. Letsile Tebogo took the silver medal with a new national record. And for Zharnel Hughes, the bronze medal was probably a dream come true, as he burst into tears after the rankings were announced.
