Maria Höfl-Riesch - comeback and farewell?

After the injury misfortune in 2006 and double gold in Vancouver in 2010, Maria Höfl-Riesch wants to attack once again this winter at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, her second Olympics.

Maria Höfl-Riesch goes into the current winter season well prepared and wants to prove herself once again in all her disciplines. The highlight is, of course, the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, which begin on February 7, 2014. How will the German medal hopeful do in her second Olympics?

Her greatest successes to date include two Olympic victories in slalom and super combined at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, winning the overall Alpine Ski World Cup 2010/11 and a gold medal each in slalom and super combined at the 2009 and 2013 World Championships. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch, Germany, things didn't go quite as smoothly due to flu. Nevertheless, Riesch finished third in the downhill and super-G and fourth in the slalom. Last season, she won a slalom World Cup victory in Levi, Finland, and took combined gold at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Schladming, as well as two bronze medals in downhill and in the team race.

Olympic victory in focus
Höfl-Riesch is attacking early in this winter season. "I feel fresher than ever," she revealed to the German magazine Focus. She could build on last year's success in Levi in mid-November, and her packed World Cup calendar then takes her to Beaver Creek, Lake Louise, St. Moritz, Courchevel, Val-d'Isère, Lienz, Munich, Zagreb, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee and Cortina d'Ampezzo before competing in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the end of January. A victory in front of the home crowd in the downhill race and in the Super G would certainly be the best incentive for the Winter Olympics in Sochi,
