Giro d'Italia 2014 - 6th stage : Sassano - Montecassino (247km)

A mass crash about 11 kilometers before the Finsih led to disaster for some favorites. The Australian Michale Matthews of Team Orica Greenedge benefited from this and is still the bearer of the pink bib.

Once again, the conditions were critical for the pros. The wet roads led to a mass crash at a traffic island, 11 kilometers from the finish. Giampaolo Caruso and Angel Vicioso of the Katusha team had to be taken to hospital. Their captain and co-favorite Joaquin Rodriguez finished the race but was then taken to the hospital for further examination. With a gap of over seven minutes to the leader, it is now questionable what he can still do at the Tour. Already his opponents would have to be involved in a next crash of the coming stages.
Matthews, the leader of this year's Tour so far, seems to have been lucky. With a small group he managed to break away from the peloton after the mass crash and won this stage ahead of Tim Wellens and Cadel Evans. Uran Rigoberto and Nairo Quintana lost about 50 seconds to the winner, but like Evans they still have their title chances.
