Giro d'Italia 2014 - 5th stage from Taranto - Viggiano (203 km)

Australian Michael Matthews of Team Orica Greenedge continued to defend his pink bib, meanwhile the favorites are slowly closing in. The German young talent Marcel Kittel of the Giant-Shimano racing team, who won the 2nd and 3rd stage, had to give up already in the 4th stage due to illness. He wants to be part of the Tour de France.

Michael Matthews managed the feat and crossed the finish line in sixth place after 203 km in Viggiano and continued to secure the overall classification at this year's Tour. Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) followed behind him. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) finished tenth. Uran Rigoberto (Omega) finished fourth and Cadel Evans (BMC) made it across the finish line in second place behind the beaming Italian winner of this stage, Diego Ulissi of Team Lampre-Merida. The favorites seemed to benefit from the hilly terrain and better weather conditions in contrast to the previous day. Quintana made a leap forward and improved by 44 places Rodriguez even by 74.
