Wimbledon 2018 - Round 1

In the men's event, almost all of the seeded favorites easily defeated their opponents.

Roger Federer defeated Serbian Dusan Lajovic in three sets without any problems worth mentioning. Rafael Nadal also won easily in three sets against Israeli Dudui Sela. Novac Djokowic defeated the American Tennys Sandgren 6:3, 6:1, and 6:2. The Australian James Duckworth lost to the German favorite Alexander Zverev in 5:7, 2:6, and 0:6. Juan Martin del Potro defeated the German Peter Gojowczyk clearly in three sets. Milos Raonic from Canada had an easy match with Liam Broady from Great Britain. The Brit held on well in the first set 5:7, but he collapsed in the following sets and lost 6:0 and 6:1.

The Wimbledon winner of 2013 and 2016, Andy Murray, canceled his participation for this year at short notice. After the almost one-year break, it was too early to play over three winning sets again.

Stan Wawrinka had a surprisingly hard time against the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who won the first set 6:1. The Swiss was slow to get into the match and the Bulgarian challenged the Vaudois for two tie-breaks, which the Swiss was able to decide in his favor. It was not until the fourth set that he was able to live up to his role as favorite, winning it 6:4 and thus also the match. Wawrinka then also emphasized in the interview that he had a difficult opponent in front of him, who had played excellently.

Austrian Dominic Thiem, who played this year's final of Roland Garros against Rafael Nadal, had to retire early in the third set in the match against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis at 2:0. The back pain he suffered when he fell in the first set made it impossible to continue the match.
