Shimano GRX: The world's first components for Gravel

Shimano presents the new "GRX" series, the first Gravel-specific component family in the world. The series impresses with its scope. Numerous options and variants make the new series enormously versatile, including 1-speed and 2-speed drives, mechanical or electronic shifting systems, 10-speed or 11-speed versions, integrated control options for retractable seatposts and wide or narrow gradation variants. Thus, it is ideally equipped for every application and every expression of the Gravel sector.

That Shimano can present with the GRX the first Gravel-specific component family, which is designed equally for fast progress as for safe bike handling on loose surfaces, is the result of an intensive and extensive research, testing and development process, in which information and feedback from countless riders who are on trails, forest roads, gravel roads or asphalt around the world.

The GRX family consists of components from the RX800, RX600 and RX400 series with 1×11, 2×11 and 2×10-speed drivetrains, as well as Di2 mechanical and electronic shifting systems, allowing cyclists to tailor their equipment for touring on a variety of surfaces and, in keeping with the motto "Explore Beyond!", push their existing cycling limits.

Shimano's engineers also broke new ground in developing the new component family and in some cases broke with traditional ways of thinking. Only in this way was it possible to create a new platform that is designed and prepared for today's, but also for future requirements of cyclists. No matter whether it is gravel riding in the strict sense of the word, road bike adventures off paved roads, bikepacking, commuting or the requirements of demanding cyclocross racers: SHIMANOs GRX components offer countless options that leave nothing to be desired in terms of ratios and gradations, customizable ergonomics, integrated operation of retractable seatposts to specific Gravel wheelsets with wider rim profile.

The components
A detailed look at the individual components shows that SHIMANO's GRX family provides three different crank options: 1×11-, 2×11- or 2×10-speed. In addition, there are of course matching derailleurs and front derailleurs, disc brakes with a new upper link brake lever fully integrated into the hydraulic system and STI shift / brake levers in mechanical or electronic Di2 version.

All these components are based on Shimano's market-leading technologies, combining elements from both the road and mountain bike segments to guarantee the shifting precision and reliability for which Shimano is known worldwide like no other company. The result is the GRX family of quiet, smooth-running drivetrains designed specifically for the unique characteristics of the gravel segment in terms of surface, riding position and bike design.

To reduce complexity, the GRX series recommends using Shimano's mountain bike (DEORE XT, SLX, DEORE) or road bike (ULTEGRA, 105, TIAGRA) cassettes and chains that are already part of the lineup. In addition to the flagship components of the family from the GRX 800 series, more affordable 11-speed parts such as GRX 600 cranksets and shifters are also available, which can be seamlessly combined with 800 series components. Even more affordable setups can be achieved with the 10-speed cranks, derailleurs, front derailleurs, shifters and brakes that are also part of the GRX family. Thus, GRX from the light gravel race machine to the entry-level recreational bike all imaginable gravel bike types can be equipped with suitable quality components.

GRX cranksets (FC)
The GRX cranksets were developed to be able to master a wide variety of terrain with different driving styles. All versions are characterized for a 2.5 mm wider chainline, which creates more space in the frame design and for wider tires. GRX 1-speed cranks minimize shifting complexity by requiring shifting only at the rear of the cassette (optional RX800/600 40Z cassettes or RX800 42Z- cassette), and are equipped with chainrings with SHIMANO's DYNAMIC CHAIN ENGAGEMENT+ tooth profile that provide optimal chain retention, especially on bumpy surfaces. In contrast, the GRX 2-speed crank RX810 is characterized by the specific 17-tooth difference between large 48Z and small 31Z chainring, the widest gradation of all SHIMANO components to date. Together with the 46-30Z cranks of the RX600 series (10-speed and 11-speed), the 2-speed cranks of the GRX family thus offer more than enough bandwidth for super steep climbs and high speeds on the flat or on descents.

GRX front derailleur (FD)
To match the cranksets, the Di2 (FD-RX815) and mechanical (FD-RX810/RX400) front derailleurs are also designed for a 2.5mm wider chainline, allowing tire widths up to 42mm for rough terrain. The two RX800 front derailleurs (mechanical and Di2) are designed to handle the 17-tooth chainring difference of the RX800 48- 31Z crank, while the FD-RX400 front derailleur is ideally matched with the 16-tooth difference of the RX600 crank for 10-speed with 46-30 teeth. All front derailleurs of course offer the SHIMANO-typical shifting performance and precision. The Di2 front derailleur can be easily and intuitively adjusted via the integrated control functions, the mechanical front derailleurs impress with smooth operation with a very ergonomic force curve and the integration of cable clamp and adjustment function.

GRX rear derailleurs (RD):
Based on the technology that SHIMANO introduced in 2018 with the RX rear derailleurs, the GRX rear derailleurs RD-RX815/817 (Di2) and RD- RX810/812/400 (mechanical) are characterized by quiet, smooth, precise and reliable shifting even in the most demanding terrain, for which the chain stabilization system known as SHADOW RD+ is primarily responsible. It prevents the beating of the chain and superfluous movements of the rear derailleur cage and thus ensures uninterrupted shifting performance. In total, the GRX family offers five rear derailleurs, depending on the choice of cassette and shifting system. For 11-30Z or 11-34Z cassettes at ULTEGRA, 105 or TIAGRA level, the rear derailleurs with short cage (Di2: RD- RX815; mechanical: RD-RX810) are used. Those who use the 11-40Z or 11-42Z cassettes of the DEORE XT, SLX or DEORE groups, on the other hand, need the rear derailleurs with long cage (Di2: RD-RX817; mechanical: RD-RX812), both of which have a road bike-specific lever pull ratio. Finally, a 10-speed setup uses SHIMANO's HG500-10 cassettes (11-32Z, 11-34Z, 11-36Z) with the RD-RX400 rear derailleur.

GRX STI shift/brake lever (ST):
The GRX shifting system is operated via new STI shift/brake levers with Gravel-specific ergonomics. (Di2: ST-RX815, mechanical: ST-RX810/ RX600/RX400, ST-RX810-LA). All feature an 18 mm higher suspended pivot of the brake lever, a curved lever shape and non-slip textures on the contact surfaces for optimum grip even in the roughest terrain.
For the integration of retractable seatposts in the Gravel segment SHIMANO specially developed the hydraulic STI lever ST-RX810-LA, which, mounted on the left side, uses the lateral movement of the lever not required for shifting in 1-speed systems for the operation of the seatpost. The integrated traction system is designed for 9 mm stroke and therefore works with most common dropper posts. Completing the GRX family STI lineup are the 1×11-speed RX800 and RX600 STIs for links without shifting or DSP functionality including the 1×11 Di2 version (ST-RX815), whose three switches (two on the side and one on the top of the horn) can be used to operate third-party devices such as compatible lights or computers.

GRX Brake Systems:
A key concern of Gravel riders is a reliable braking system with sufficient power reserves to maintain control on steep, demanding or even surprising descents. For maximum performance and controllability, the top model of the RX800 brake levers (ST-RX815) is therefore equipped with SHIMANOs famous and in the mountain bike sector long established SERVO WAVE technology. But also the RX810 levers without SERVO WAVE function, as well as the RX600 and RX400 models are characterized by excellent deceleration performance. A completely new, additional operating option for the braking system is provided by the BL-RX812-L/R auxiliary brake lever, which is mounted on the top link and integrated directly into the closed hydraulic system. This means that in appropriate driving situations, the upper link handle can also be used to brake comfortably and safely without having to take the hand off the handlebar in dangerous situations.

Gravel specific wheelset:
To round off the complete Gravel experience, SHIMANO has also developed two Gravel-specific wheelsets with 12 mm E-THRU thru axles (WH-RX570-TL-F12/R12) for the GRX family. The Tubeless- Ready wheels available in 700C or 650B (Non-Boost) are characterized by an optimal ratio of weight, stiffness and - especially important in the gravel area - robustness. A rim inner diameter of 21.6 mm (as in XC mountain bike wheels) and offset rim profiles with 22 mm height meet all gravel-specific requirements.
