Patrick Wieser becomes new race director at the Jungfrau Marathon

The 27th Jungfrau Marathon will kick off on September 7, 2019 with a new race director. Long-time mountain runner Patrick Wieser has taken over this position. The sales record and Judith Wyder as honorary starter also promise an exceptional event in front of a beautiful backdrop from Interlaken to the small Scheidegg.

He has run the world's "most beautiful" marathon a full ten times himself, finishing third in the Jungfrau Marathon in 2008 and fourth in the Mountain Running Long Distance World Championships in 2012. Now that Patrick Wieser has hung up his career as a mountain runner, he is focusing on his position as race director: "I was able to run in third place once, but thanks to my new job I now have a different perspective."

For Wieser, who works as a cantonal police officer in Zurich and won European team bronze in the marathon in 2014, the Jungfrau Marathon is a very special race: "For me, this is a matter of the heart, because I feel very connected to the Jungfrau Marathon. The fact that I can be part of this extraordinary event as race director fills me with pride and a lot of joy."

New sales record
Already last year, all available places were booked up within a short time. In 2019, things went even faster. The sale started on February 14, 2019. Within 36 hours, all 4000 open starting places went over the table, which is a new record! The popularity of the prestigious Jungfrau Marathon seems limitless.

Judith Wyder 2019 Honorary Starter
The five-time orienteering world champion and six-time European orienteering champion Judith Wyder will be present at the 27th Jungfrau Marathon as an honorary starter. Wyder ended her career as an active professional orienteer last year and will send the 4,000 runners on the course in 2019.

UNESCO World Heritage Trophy: Jungfrau Marathon and Aletsch Half Marathon
Together with the Aletsch Half Marathon, the Jungfrau Marathon is one of the most popular mountain running events in Europe. Both lead through the overwhelming nature of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. Starting this year, the two running classics can be experienced together under the UNESCO World Heritage Trophy. The aim is to draw attention to the uniqueness and preservation of the nature of this region. Both runs sold out quickly and now offer their runners the opportunity to participate in a training weekend in preparation.
