First records at the first Diamond League meeting in Doha

Last Friday was the start of the Diamond League season 2017 in Doha (Qatar). Not yet the biggest stars in all disciplines were at the start, but the field was already well occupied and the first records fell.

by Rolf Fleckenstein

The first meeting seems to be not the most important meeting at the Diamond Series for all athletes and some athletes definitely still need to warm up into the year. This was clearly evident in the men's 100-meter dash. The winner, South African Simbine Akani, ran within his capabilities with his 9.99 seconds (his best was 9.89 seconds). On the other hand, Jamaica's Asafa Powell finished second with 10.08 seconds and American Justin Gatlin did not get up to speed yet with 10.14 seconds. With record times of 9.72 seconds (Powell) and 9.74 seconds (Gatlin), they are capable of more, but the season has only just begun.

Record javelin throw Thomas Röhler
As one of the outstanding highlights of the meeting must be mentioned the record distance of 93.60 m in the javelin throw of the German athlete Thomas Röhler, Olympic champion 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. With this, Röhler set the national record, the meeting record and the Diamond League record at the same time. This is not surprising when you know that since 1986 only Jan Železný shot further and holds the world record with a distance of 98.48m.

More records
In the women's 800-meter run, South Africa's Caster Semenya set a meeting record with a time of 1:56:61, as did Kenya's Hyvin Kiyeng with a time of 9:00:12 in the 3000m Steeple. In the U20 (Under 20) age category, Celliphine Chepteek Chespol set a new world record in the 3000m Stepple run with a time of 9:05:70. Other athletes who shone at the meeting were high jumper Mutaz Essa Brashim of Qatar, who jumped 2.36 m, Ronald Kwemoi of Kenya, who ran 7:28:73 in the 3000 m race, and his compatriot Elijah Motonei Manangoi, who ran 3:31:90 in the 1500 m race.
