Dakar Rally 2020: 2nd stage

Today, 401 km from Al Wajh to Neom await the drivers of the desert rally. Navigation skills are required here, as well as respect for nature, the desert sand, the stones, and the tracks. Anyone who does not develop the right feeling for the route here will lose a lot of time.

In the car category, the veteran Giniel de Villiers from South Africa was able to make things clear. The winner of the 2009 Dakar Rally, who also regularly shone with a second place at past Dakar Rallies, took almost four minutes off his nearest rival Orlando Terranova on the stage. Due to the considerable gap in the first stage Terranova was able to take the lead in the overall classification, the South African caught up to 6th place. With 5th place and a gap of almost 12 minutes, Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar was able to secure 3rd place overall. The winner of the 2015 and 2011 Dakar Rally is one of the crown favorites for the 2020 Rally, as the Qatari-born driver is almost at home here. Rookie Alonso Fernando had to experience right away how tough the rally can be. A puncture and wheel change cost the Spaniard over 2 hours, which is why he crossed the finish line 2:34 hours behind the leader and dropped to 47th place overall.

Among the bikers, the winner of the first stage and winner of the 2016 Dakar Rally, Australian Toby Price, could not match the same pace of the previous day. He lost a remarkable 12 minutes on the stage, 2 minutes of which were penalty time, which drops him to 9th place overall. In contrast, Chilean Pablo Quintanilla was able to move up to third place overall with today's second place. Quintanilla is one of the best riders of both rallies. Last year he just missed the podium due to an accident on the last stage. He is one of the contenders to win the 2020 rally. With second place on the second stage, Briton Sam Sunderland took the lead in the overall classification and among the Red Bull KTM factory riders. The victory of today's stage can be credited to Botswana-born Ross Branch, better known as "Kalahari Ferrari". He thus moves up to 6th intermediate place.
