Australian Open 2015: Wawrinka shows huge fighter's heart in semifinals

As was to be expected, this encounter between the two at a Grand Slam was also an exciting, combative and exhausting match that lasted five sets. After a close battle in the first set, which Djokovic won in the end via tie-break, Wawrinka clearly won the second set. Wawrinka shows his usual fighting spirit: he is trailing 0:3 in the third set and catches up to 4:4 and loses the third set 6:4 - Djokovic:Wawrinka.

Wawrinka shows character in the 4th set
Djokovic serves and wins his first service game. Wawrinka again loses his service game somewhat unhappily and is immediately 2:0 behind again. But Wawrinka fights back, puts on pressure: the third service game 15:0, 15:15, 15:30, 15:40 and suddenly Wawrinka has two break chances. Wawrinka can score and Djokovic loses his service game: the score is 2:1. Wawrinka plays up, Djokovic seems a bit fragile, uncertain, weak, which gives hope to the Swiss fans. Wawrinka clearly has more winners, but unfortunately also more unforced errors. And suddenly Wawrinka is trailing 40:15 on his own serve, but he shows character and delivers an impressive picture-book stop ball and reduces the score to 40:30. Stan is also able to fend off Djokovic's second break point. This is the almost typical situation of Wawrinka in the match: he is behind, almost hopeless, and fights his way back again, impressively. From 40:15, he can finally catch up on Deuce and win the match 2:2 after Advantage. A hard-fought but convincing game from Wawrinka, the man has character. It goes up and down, strong moves are followed by weak returns. After 3:2, the score is 3:3 and all Swiss hope that Wawrinka can break Djokovic. And Djokovic shows impossible returns, so that Wawrinka really manages to take his service game from the Serb. Wawrinka leads 3:4 and serves. This is the chance to take the set early. Djokovic shows weak returns, but Wawrinka delivers a consistently high performance. On his own serve, Wawrinka shows determination and serves an ace right from the start at 0:15, followed by a second ace at 0:30, he rises to 0:40 and takes the lead at 3:5. Djokovic tries to put pressure on, but Wawrinka resists and soon it's 15:40 and Wawrinka has two break points to level the set. With a strong forehand, Wawrinka can win the set, in which he was behind at the beginning. The analysis shows: 11 winners for Wawrinka, 0 winners for Djokovic in the fourth set. The Swiss becomes more and more dominant.

The 5th set becomes a thriller
And it comes to the all-decisive 5th set. Djokovic serves. Wawrinka shows a very strong return game and it is already 15:30 D:W. Despite Djokovic's serve, the score is already 40:40 on Djokovic's first service game, Wawrinka puts pressure on, wants the break right from the start, but Djokovic is lucky to win his service game. It's 1:0 D:W in the 5th set. And for God's sake, unexpectedly Djokovic gets the break to 2:0, Wawrinka makes the game and hits the winners, but unfortunately also the errors, maybe he wanted it too much, can he fight back like in the 4th set before? It's a real thriller, but always with Wawrinka behind. We're keeping our fingers firmly crossed. Has "Stan" made Djokovic strong by his mistakes? It seems a bit like that, Djokovic is not convincing, but Wawrinka makes more mistakes, the consequence it is suddenly 3:0 for Djokovic in the 5th set. And now the misfortune seems to take its course, because for heaven's sake, despite Wawrinka's own serve and a good game, it's 0:30 for Djokovic, Wawrinka turns up a bit, but Djokovic seems stronger and Wawrinka partly hits back badly: the consequence, it's 40:40 and now Djokovic has the double break chance, and oh God, he can use it! Too many errors from Wawrinka lift the Serb to a whopping lead of 4:0 in the 5th set. What a disaster from the Swiss point of view! Djokovic seems to be tired as well and commits errors 30:30, 30:40, Wawrinka has a break chance, but he can't take it, advantage Djokovic, but again Deuce, it goes back and forth, again advantage Djokovic and again Deuce, again a shitty return from Stan, again advantage Djokovic, and with an ASS Djokovic takes this game as well and it is 5:0 D:W. Djokovic has turned this set, which he started under pressure, in his favor and is now putting pressure on Wawrinka. Now we need a tennis miracle! Stan serves, looks strong, but Djokovic looks invigorated, even liberated, by his high lead and can extend to 30:40 at 30:30 and work out his match point and take it right away for the win. Too bad for all the honest and great work of Wawrinka, but too many mistakes in the 5th set and it is 6:0 for Djokovic. This means an almost a little unfair defeat for Wawrinka, if you think about all his impressive recovery work in the 4th set, but maybe in the end also the physical and mental strength was missing to continue scoring with such pressure against Djokovic. So Novak Djokovic moves into the final and Stanislas Wawrinka is eliminated from the tournament in the semifinals, much to the regret of the Swiss tennis fans!

Overall, it turned out to be a thriller, although not as spectacular as last year. Wawrinka dominated the match for long periods, made the match, but in the end the many unnecessary mistakes on Wawrinka's side took revenge and the strong comeback of the Swiss was not rewarded in the end. The result of the last set in no way reflects the match. Especially for the Swiss tennis fans, the outcome of the match is a pity and would perhaps have been fairer if the outcome had been the other way around, but that's sport. For the Australian Open, this means a worthy final with Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, and for Stanslas Wawrinka it means the end of his Australian Open 2015.
