Zermatt is snowed in

Sometimes there is too little snow, sometimes too much. At the moment it hits Zermatt.

Zermatt is currently not accessible by road or rail. The reason for this is large amounts of snow and avalanche danger, which make the use of the road and railroad line too dangerous. The road Zermatt - Täsch was closed on Saturday evening, 20 January 2018 at 20:00. At 22:00 the railroad service between Täsch and Zermatt was suspended.

Already on Saturday afternoon, Zermatt Tourism informed guests about the high probability of another road and rail closure. Guests with important appointments thus had the opportunity to start their arrival or departure.

About 9,000 holidaymakers are currently spending their vacations in Zermatt. The situation in the village is calm. There is no danger for the population, according to the security service of the municipality of Zermatt.

Currently, the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF assesses the region at danger level 4, which is the second highest level. Skiing and walking on the winter hiking trails is only possible to a limited extent.

The duration of the road and rail closure is not yet known. Weather permitting, Air Zermatt will fly shuttle flights between Täsch and Zermatt for arriving and departing guests from Sunday, 21 January 2018 at 12:00.

Zermatt Tourism recommends that arriving guests contact the accommodation providers. It is advisable to plan a stopover in larger conurbations such as Zurich, Basel, Bern, Geneva or Lausanne on the journey and wait.

Already one and a half weeks ago, Zermatt was not accessible for almost two days. The village is prepared for such cases and has sufficient supplies.
