The Swiss Indoors 2022 crowns a new winner: Felix Auger-Aliassime

The Swiss Indoors 2022 knows a new winner: Felix Auger-Aliassime. The special hard court tournament in Basel, Switzerland, impresses in 2022 with a great line-up of players and with a somewhat surprising winner.

Let's be honest now, nobody probably had Felix Auger-Aliassime on their radar as a winner when the tournament kicked off in Basel on October 22, 2022. The Canadian tennis player, who has been playing in the pros since 2017, will simply not be known to many, even though he has been ranked in the top 10 of the ATP world rankings since this year. Felix Auger (French, pronounced "Osche")-Aliassime is the son of Marie Auger, a Canadian from the Quebec region, and Sam Aliassime from Togo, West Africa. Since 2019, he has been fighting his way through important finals at major ATP tournaments. Last year, he ended in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the semifinals at the US Open. In 2022, he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

No, rather, the almost newly crowned number 1 in world tennis, Carlos Alcaraz, was seen as the clear favorite of the tournament. Yet the 2022 tournament shone with other great players such as Stanislas Wawrinka, Roberto Bautista Agut, veteran Andy Murray, 2017 world No. 1, or such talents as Caspar Ruud, ranked No. 4 in the world rankings, and Jack Draper, to name just a few. The latter in particular delivered a great match on equal terms against world No. 1 Carlos Alacaraz, which almost ended in favor of the ambitious Englishman. The Swiss audience started to murmur and applaud tumultuously when Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka - ranked 3 to 8 in the world in 2014 to 2017 - played. In the quarterfinals against Roberto Bautista Agut, he almost showed his old greatness with fabulous winners and his legendary fighter's heart. It was a pity that it was over for him at the quarterfinal stage, but the cool Spaniard was just a little bit better. With the victory in the semi-finals over the number 1, Carlos Alcaraz, Auger-Aliassime showed that he was rightly the winner of the tournament. Too straightforward his appearance, too determined his strokes. In the end, he rightly took the trophy in Basel. With him, another young player is now in the court to replace the old generation of top players.
