Surprise at the opening race of the Alpine Ski World Cup 2017

The first race at the Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz was full of suspense, which ended with a surprise winner. At this point, a huge compliment must be made to the organizers. A great set course presented itself in an exceptionally perfect condition. An exciting and fair race was guaranteed. A world championship has its own rules, which was impressively proven by the race on Tuesday: The great dominator of the current season in the super-G, Lara Gut, was able to win a medal, but it was not the desired gold. Accordingly, she had to bite at the finish line, which speaks for her always extraordinary ambition. Surely this also has to do with the fact that she had a perfect run. This also takes some of the pressure off the Swiss team to live up to the expectations at the home World Championships. Extraordinarily pleasing was the run of the always so likeable Tina Weirather, who finished just 3 hundredths ahead of Lara Gut. The big surprise was the unexpected victory of Nicole Schmidhofer. Nobody had expected her, as she had never been on the podium in the Super-G before, and then this triumph. Her scream of joy at the finish was correspondingly great. Various favorites failed, such as Lindsey Vonn, who dropped out, or Ilka Stuhec, who only finished in 11th place. All in all, the spectators experienced a great start to the Alpine Ski World Championships 2017. We are curious to see what happens next.
