The women's 100 m final at the 2023 World Championships in Athletics in Budapest was a big surprise last night. The 23-year-old American Sha'Carri Richardson won the gold medal in the 100 m with a record time of 10.65 seconds and left the big favorites Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson standing.
In the run-up to the eagerly awaited 100 m final, there was much speculation about the possible winners. Top of the list was 10-time gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica, who is exceptionally fit and fast despite her 36 years. But Shericka Jackson was the clear favorite in my opinion. She also delivered the best time in the semifinal with a time of 10.79 seconds. The young Sha'Carri Richardson from the USA was not really on the cards, although she also shone in the semifinal and after a race to catch up - she doesn't seem to be a really good starter - she ran an amazing time. She might have been considered an insider's tip if one had been aware that she ran the second-fastest time of all time in April with 10.57 seconds and that she won the Diamond League meeting in Doha with 10.75 seconds and the American championship with 10.71 seconds.
So the 8 finalists lined up on the starting line and all the reporters and spectators had their eyes on Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who with her yellow-orange-red hair in a fire look showed how she was "on fire" for the victory. The starting signal was given and the Jamaicans stormed off, closely followed by Marie-Josée Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast, who has been one of the absolute top 5 for years. but suddenly Sha'Carri Richardson came racing down the outer right lane and left everyone standing - there was no stopping her. she crossed the finish line well clear of a world record time of 10.65 seconds and brought the gold medal back to the USA. The surprise was written all over everyone's face. but this young runner has what it takes to set a new world record. this victory is simply admirable and moving.
