Clément Noël with strong nerves wins in Zagreb

It was an unusual slalom race this Sunday. Many favorites failed to meet expectations and many riders who were not expected to be right at the front surprised the spectators with a sensational performance.

There was an Alexis Pinturault, who was the second runner in the first run and stumbled in the middle section at a crest, but still stayed in the race and lost only 1.12 sec. behind the leader. After an erroneous disqualification, he was able to start the 2nd run. He didn't manage a dream run, but he was fully satisfied with 9th place, considering his mistake in the 1st run.

Henrik Kristoffersen had trouble staying on the course in the same place as Pinturault and lost 1.50 seconds to Ramon Zenhäusern, who was in the lead. Also in the 2nd run he could not improve, skied cramped and had too many small driving errors, which brought him the 19th final place. Unusually weak on this day!

A positive surprise was the young Italian Alex Vinatzer, who started with bib number 26 and finished 8th after the first run, 0.82 sec. behind Zenhäusern. With a strong performance in the 2nd run, especially in the upper part of the course, he made it quite unexpectedly to the podium as third of the final rank.

He took over the lead from the Belgian Armand Marchant, who also drove surprisingly strongly, mastered the final part of the track in the 2nd run like no other and proved to the competitors that it is possible to drive right to the front even with the high starting number 40. He ultimately finished fifth in the final classification.

20-year-old Lucas Braathen from Norway did the same to Marchant. He started the race with number 48 and eventually finished in sixth place.

But also Linus Strasser surprised everyone with his very committed driving and the 3rd place in the 1st run with start number 31. In the 2nd run he drove very lively in the upper part of the track, lost time in the lower part like many others in contrast to Marchant and finished the race in seventh place. This was not to be expected and a great result for the German.

Manfred Moelgg and Andre Myhrer shone with fifth and sixth place in the first run. The two veterans finished the race within the top ten, Andre Myhrer in fourth and Mani Moelgg in eighth.

Michael Matt who shone in the 1st run and was only 0.07 sec. behind the Swiss who was on pole, could not quite repeat his good performance in the 2nd run. Although he extended his lead over Clement, who was in the lead at that time, in the upper part, he was too fast in a right turn, took off and dropped out. Too bad, there was a lot possible. As he said himself, such a mistake must not happen.

Ramon Zenhäusern was the last to start the 2nd run. At the top he still kept up well, but by the finish he lost 0.07 sec. which earned him second place.

The winner of the race was Clément Noël. In the first run, he made the same mistake as his compatriot Pinturault, but it hardly cost him any time. Only just 0.27 sec. separated him and Zenhäusern. He seemed to have learned from the incident in Val d'Isère, where he had to deal with pressure of expectation from the fans and retired unhappily. This time he kept his nerves, concentrated and put in a flawless second run, which earned him the victory.
