Fred Kerley is in top form at the American Championships. On Friday evening he won the 100m with 9.77s. In the semifinal before he had set a new best: 9.76 s. He is ready for gold!

The American track and field championships are usually as far away for Europeans as European championships are for Americans, but this time a piece of news makes people sit up and take notice. Fred Kerley, the current world number 1 in the 100 m discipline (source: Worldathletics.org), sets a new record last Friday. In the semifinals, he runs in 9.76 seconds over 100 m for the first time, setting a new record of his own over 100 m and also the world's best performance for the year. This is all the more important because it happened on the track at Haywar Field stadium in Eugene, Oregon, USA, the venue for the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in three weeks from July 15-24, 2022.

This puts Kerley in the gold position and as of now he is considered the crown favorite for the 100m race at the World Championships in about three weeks. Marvin Bracy ran 9.85 seconds and Trayvon Bromell 9.88 seconds behind Kerley. Trayvon Bromell's best time, by the way, is also 9.76 s in the 100m. Christian Coleman, who convinced in the semifinals with 9.87 s, waived the final run, because he is already seeded as defending champion anyway. The Americans are in form and with the four sprinters, of which three sprinters (Coleman, Bromell and Kerley) can run under 9.8 s, they provide a top team with the best line-up for the World Championships, but there are other favorites on the program, if you think of Lamont Marcell Jacobs and Ferdinand Omanyala, who wants to break Usain Bolt's record time (9.58 s). With the team, the Americans are also the clear favorites for the 4 x 100 m relay. One can look forward to new records at the World Championships here.
