Formula 1 - Hungarian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel wins his second race of the season for Ferrari in commanding style. His teammate Kimi Räikkönen had to retire from the race due to an engine problem, otherwise a first-ever one-two for Ferrari would have been possible.

From B.Fleckenstein

The race was to be unusual for all concerned and it began with the drivers being sent out on a second formation lap. After the red lights went out, Hamilton on pole didn't get off to the best start, with Sebastian Vettel passing him on the left and taking the lead before the first corner. Nico Rosberg overtook his teammate on the right in his Silver Arrow. Kimi Raikkonen was also faster than Hamilton and pulled on the inside at the second turn, outbraking Rosberg and that meant a double lead for the Ferrari crew. Sebastian Vettel set fastest lap after fastest lap and continuously increased his gap to his pursuers. Lewis Hamilton hit the gravel on lap 3 and that cost him six places. Lap 20 was the time for the first tire changes, but there was no change in the Ferarris' lead. Vettel led ahead of Raikkonen (+5 sec.), Rosberg (+11 sec.), Ricciardo (+30 sec.) and Hamilton (+37 sec.). On lap 41, Raikkonen radioed his team and said he was hearing noises from the engine and he was losing speed, which cost him a few places despite being 15 seconds ahead of his first chaser, Rosberg. It seemed to be a problem with the electric motor that converts braking energy.

Hülkenberg's crash changed Vettel's comfortable situation
Two laps later, the front wing of Nico Hülkenberg's Force India came loose, which he himself immediately ran over and shot straight into the tire pile almost without braking. The safety car was sent out onto the track, while the drivers pitted for their final tire change. Ferrari and Mercedes switched to Prime, the harder compound. Daniel Ricciardo rejoined the race on the faster soft tires. The flying start was made on lap 49. Vettel immediately managed to gain distance, but Raikkonen was immediately reeled in by Rosberg. Hamilton lost many places, as he had on the first start, and Bottas suffered a puncture in the scrum of the "second start." Raikkonen went to the pits on lap 53 and there the engine simply went out. The problems could not be solved, so four laps later he had his Ferrari pushed into the garage. Too bad after 40 laps of double lead!
These unfortunate circumstances, which meant the end for Raikkonen and relegated Bottas and Hamilton to the rear places, brought other drivers successful placings. Fernando Alonso, for example, surprised many spectators in his McLaren-Honda with sixth place on lap 58. Team-mate Jenson Button also drove within the points in ninth place.

Ricciardo and Rosberg shot each other down in the battle for the podium position
On lap 64, with five laps to go, Vettel was still in the lead, just over a second ahead of Rosberg, and Ricciardo was following Rosberg with about half a second to go. The Red Bull driver tried to brake late into the corner after the long straight to outbrake Rosberg, but he in turn passed Ricciardo and tried to get right in front of him, but he seemed to miscalculate as his left rear tire touched Ricciardo's front wing. That led to a flat tire for Rosberg and Ricciardo also had to pit. Laughing third in the duel was Daniil Kvyat, who inherited second place from Rosberg. Ricciardo managed to retain his third place despite the pit stop, during which he had a new front wing fitted.

After 69 laps, Sebastian Vettel finished the race as the deserved winner followed by Red Bull drivers Daniil Kvjat and Daniel Ricciardo. Fernando Alonso achieved his best result for Mclaren with fifth place.
