Wimbledon 2022 News

The most important tournament of the year, which will be held from June 27 to July 10, 2022, has made public its admission practices. As has been known for a few days, no Russian and Belarusian players will be admitted to the tournament. It is perhaps somewhat surprising that last year's winner Novak Djokovic will be admitted to the tournament despite exclusions in Australia and the USA.

Already a few days ago it became known that the tennis tournament in Wimbledon will not admit players from Russia or Belarus to the tournament. This means that top players such as Daniil Medvedev will be excluded from the tournament, which was strongly criticized by individual players as well as by the tennis associations ATP and WTA. As a justification, the organizers let it be known that the successes of the players from the countries concerned could be misused for propaganda purposes by the regimes. In addition, the organizers saw a danger for the players and their families, who would publicly distance themselves from their regimes. Unfortunately, the Ukraine war has also arrived at Wimbledon, which many regret.

But not only the Ukraine war has led to unusual problems, but also the preceding and still rampant Corona pandemic. Probably the best-known victim is the Serb Novak Djokovic, who was ingloriously excluded from the Australian Open because he did not want to be vaccinated, which is his right. But for this exception they had no open ear in Australia. Djokovic was isolated after his arrival in Australia and deported after a court decision. The extreme media clamor surrounding the expulsion of the world number one had certainly damaged the tournament and Australia's reputation. The same thing happened to Djokovic at the American tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.

The latter should now be all the more surprised and happy that he has been given the green light to take part in the Wimbledon tournament and thus defend his title in the summer. "A vaccination was not a requirement for participation in the third Grand Slam tournament of the year," said Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC). "We plan to return to a normal tournament this year," Bolton said. "Therefore, we will not be implementing any of the Covid 19 measures from last year in a substantial way." It will give the 6-time Wimbledon winner a chance to win his 7th title. There are also no Corona-related entry restrictions at the Rome tournament or the Roland Garros Grand Slam.
