Tour de France 2019 - for the first time a South American wins the Tour

Egan Bernal is the name of the 22-year-old Colombian and makes cycling history with his triumph. Together with the victory in the Tour de Suisse, this is a remarkable year for the South American high-flyer.

The day before, the decision was made in the last mountain stage to Val Thorens. Vincenzo Nibali, who already denied being the favorite at the beginning of the Tour, tried to win a stage on his own and was able to keep his closest pursuers at a distance until the finish. The first chasing group was peppered with big names, including Valverde who finished this stage in second place, but also Nairo Quintana, who shone as a stage winner the day before, and Rigoberto Uran were part of this group as well as Thomas Geraint, last year's winner of the Tour de France, who tried to repeat his previous year's victory. The Welshman crossed the finish line in fourth place behind his teammate Egal Bernard of Team Ineos, whom he congratulated afterwards for the Tour victory.

Julian Alaphilippe, the Frenchman who wore the "Major Jaune" for 21 days, lost a little more than three minutes to Nibali to the finish. But he had already lost the Tour the day before, when he lost more than five minutes to the stage winner. Nevertheless, he was the French hopeful this year and pure joy for his compatriots.

Emanuel Buchmann of Team Bora HansGrohe was fourth overall and thus the best German. He launched a final attack in the last kilometer of the 19th stage to perhaps still be able to ride on the podium. But this endeavor was immediately thwarted and he could not decisively increase the time gap.

On the podium in Paris were finally the winner Egan Bernal, Thomas Geraint (second) and Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk (third) from Team Jumbo-Visma.

Peter Sagan won the points race and Romain Bardet was named best climber.
