Thomas Dressen raced to a start-finish victory with bib number one on today's Kandahar downhill. With him, a German wins the downhill race in Garmisch Partenkirchen for the first time in 28 years. The last German winner was Markus Wasmeier in 1992.
"For us Germans, Garmisch is simply awesome. I didn't catch hell so well, but afterwards I let the skis run",
commented Thomas Dressen on his race. He managed an almost flawless run on this very twisty track. After the botched race weekend in Kitzbühel, this must now be a real satisfaction.
The top favorites, first and foremost Switzerland's Beat Feuz, were unable to counter this, with Austria's Matthias Mayer not taking part due to flu. Even though the split times in the upper part were occasionally green, the racers lost too much time, especially in the final section, to be able to catch Dressen.
If Alexander Aamodt Kilde hadn't got stuck on a gate in the top section, he probably would have taken the lead. So in the end it was the avoidable mistakes of the competitors and the clean run of the German, which is why Thomas Dressen was crowned the deserved winner on his home track.
