Racing bike country Kufstein: Gentle hills, lush climbs and guided free tours on top

Boundless racing bike fun between Austria's highest mountain and rolling hills of the foothills of the Alps: The vacation region of Kufstein offers tours for every fitness level. Toughly ascending pass roads alternate with gentle humps for rolling in the Inn Valley. Many call the tour up the Großglockner the highlight of their sports calendar.

It doesn't always have to be a summit. But if it does, then the highest is also inviting. Instead of a cut Alpine valley, a varied terrain awaits racing cyclists in the vacation region of Kufstein, ranging from gentle hills with a pre-Alpine character to one of the toughest climbs in the Alps on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. After racy descents, a rustic gastronomy beckons.

Interval training at the Inn
The first stage of my ride with racing bike guide Anja Koch from Ferienland Kufstein takes me over green hills in the Inn Valley from Kufstein to Langkampfen, where, coincidentally, Austria's racing bike youth are currently spending their time at the Ernst Feuchtner Memorial Race organized by the Wörgl Cycling Club. Even from faraway Burgenland, racing cyclists have arrived and are giving their all for their teams.

We continue on the Inntal tour, passing illustrious towns like Kirchbichl and Schwoich on the right side of the Inn River. The qualities of the featherweight Cinelli Pro Estrada Carbon road bike, perfectly set up by Schuler Sports, prove themselves in the ups and downs of the tour. Bella Italia on the Inn. My Polar RC3 watch reassuringly indicates that the maximum pulse has not yet been reached. "The Inntal tour is perfect for getting started and is ideal interval training," advises Anja.
