Doping scandal in athletics

A few weeks before the World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, the news hit like a bombshell that well-known track and field sprint stars had tested positive for doping, including the American Tyson Gay and world record holder Asafa Powell from Jamaica. With Powell, another four athletes from Jamaica are suspected of doping. World champion of the year Gay told a conference call that he would not participate in the World Championships in August because of the doping suspicion. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) had told him Friday that he tested positive for a banned substance during a May 16 training test. He said he had not cheated but had trusted someone who had now let him down. This now eliminates the exciting duel against Usain Bolt, who incidentally is not suspected of doping. With Gay and Powell, important challengers to Usain Bolt will now be absent from the World Championships and upcoming major athletics meetings.
