Dominik Paris wins the legendary Hahnenkamm race

by Bruno Fleckenstein

The race was moved up a day due to weather conditions and opened by the best skier in training, Hannes Reichelt (AUT). With a flawless run he finally finished eighth and was able to regain self-confidence for the next races. Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR) took the precaution of not taking part in this race, as did his compatriot Kjetil Jansrud.

Matthias Mayer (AUT) started two numbers after Reichelt and missed the lead by just six hundredths. This was followed by the run of German Josef Ferstl, whose father Sepp, had won the Streif in 1978 and 1979. The intermediate times lit up green then red. It was a close affair until the very end. With a one-hundredth advantage, he moved Hannes Reichelt, who had been in the lead until then, into second place. Asked how the race went for him, he replied, "It's a very diffuse light on the course and that's why you can't see the tracks. The traverse was decisive. That's where you need courage. I'm in good shape and happy with the outcome."

The favorites settled the victory among themselves
Beat Feuz (SUI) as one of the candidates for victory started the race with bib number 7. He is still missing this victory. And he made his ambitions clear with an impressive run in which he was already 0.29 sec. ahead at the first intermediate time. After that he increased his lead continuously and took over the lead with 0.90 sec. advantage. Completely exhausted from the ride, he could only lie down in the finish area and had to rest. But this set a new best mark, which the following racers first had to beat. Vincent Kriechmayr (AUT), with bib number 9, did everything he could to break this new mark. But he almost fell in the mousetrap and had to catch himself artistically, which brought him a gap of 1.13 seconds until the fourth intermediate time. As if that wasn't enough, he almost fell again after the traverse and was just able to catch himself at the nets to prevent worse. After that, the race was over for him. His teammate Max Franz, who started the race two numbers after him, was not to fare any better. In the upper part of the U-Hackl he had to end the race due to injury.

Dominik Paris (ITA) started with number 13 and counted with his current form and the previous victories this season to the closest circle of favorites. With a lead of 17 hundredths at the first intermediate time he made the hearts of his fans beat faster. But after an unsteady run in the steep slope he lost the advantage again and was 0.15 sec. behind. In the following gliding passage he caught up again and equalized the fourth intermediate time. It was a hundredths thriller between him and Beat Feuz. At the last intermediate time he was again 0.02 sec. behind the man from Emmental. But then came the finish and with 135.9 km/h he literally flew towards victory and was finally two tenths faster than Beat Feuz. Christoph Innerhofer (ITA) started the race two numbers later. As an excellent technician, he was able to gain a quarter of a second advantage in the steep slope. In the following gliding passage and the rest of the course he just seemed to lack weight, which is why he steadily lost time - until the finish 0.93 sec. to his compatriot.

The "Streif" always exciting and good for a surprise
The victory of Dominik Paris, his second after 2013, was not so surprising. The third place of Otmar Striedinger (AUT) even more so. With bib number 27, he was simply not counted among the candidates for victory. His teammate Daniel Danklmaier, who started the race with bib number 41 and finished in fifth place, one hundredth of a second behind Christoph Innerhofer, was another indication that the condition of the track must have increasingly improved. Italian Matteo Massaglia, who finished 10th with start number 47, also benefited from this.

Beat Feuz, who already finished second last year, made the following comment in response to questions about Paris, the race and a possible repeat next year: "Dominik Paris was already loose in training.... I've never been on the limit like I was today. It was a battle from top to bottom....... If I stay injury-free, my plan is to come back next year."
