On June 16, 2018, the new athletics meeting "Citius" will take place for the first time in the athletics stadium Wankdorf Bern. Behind it are 6 brave young men who do sports themselves and have been planning this meeting for 1.5 years.
It takes courage and a life-affirming attitude to simply want to set up an athletics meeting without a large sponsor worth millions behind it. The six young initiators are to be congratulated on their courage. "Citius" means "fast" in Latin - you can see that the majority of the boys are still studying - and this also corresponds to the focus of the meeting: the running disciplines. 75 minutes of gripping athletics at national and international level are to be offered, and one figurehead has already confirmed her participation: Mujinga Kambundji. In the last five years, she has only competed once in Bern: In May 2015, Kambundji supported her home club at the national club championships with two victories in the 100m and 200m. Since then, she has established herself among the world's best, but the 25-year-old has avoided appearances in Bern - for lack of attractive competitions. In addition to Kambundji, Kariem Hussein, 2014 European champion in the 400 m hurdles, Léa Sprunger and various European national teams have also confirmed their participation.
The good idea or the project still needs some support, more than a third of the 2500 tickets are already sold, there is still some time until June 16, 2018, but a filled stadium makes even the well-known track and field athletes more fun. The meeting will be held in any case, the funds for it have been collected, according to Raphael Clemencio, who is responsible for marketing and finances. But there would also be room for sponsors. We think it's great that the 6 boys are putting on such a track and field meeting and are keeping our fingers crossed for the event.
