Australian Open 2024: Medvedev defeats Zverev in the semifinals

In the semi-final game of the Australian Open 2024 between the German Alexander Zverev and the Russian Daniil Medvedev, Medvedev emerged victorious after a hard-fought match over 5 sets and moved into the final on Sunday for the third time.

As if the German tennis player Alexander Zverev knew that he had to give everything if he wanted to have a chance of reaching the final. Zverev has never been in the final of the Australian Open and yet the German is one of the top 10 players in the world. He has been playing in the top league for 7 years, but he has never won a Grand Slam tournament. He also had a slump last year and is happy to have played his way up again. We went into the game with full energy and determination and won the first two sets. Actually, an almost hopeless situation for the Russian Daniil Medvedev, who had his back to the wall. He now had to win all of the following sets if he wanted to make it to the final. Medvedev is not a flashy player, he doesn't have an incredible serve, he doesn't have constant incredible winners, but he delivers a constantly solid baseline game that can withstand many attacks in the long run. Above all, Medvedev is mentally very strong. In contrast to Zverev, he does not freak out uncontrollably, but rather remains calm and deliberate even under pressure. He sometimes seems like a chess player on the tennis court, playing primarily with brains and strategy. His persistence then pays off. In a very close match, he takes the following two sets, 3 and 4, in a tie-break. Zverev loses his nerve, he sees his chances dwindling and Zverev often shows that he is very fragile and vulnerable when things don't go his way. After Medvedev breaks Zverev in the fifth set, the matter is clear. To everyone's surprise, Zverev even loses his last game and Medvedev wins the game, the set and the match. Medvedev deserves to make it to the final. There he meets the young Jannik Sinner, who was able to defeat the “dominator” Novak Djokovic in his semi-final. After two unsuccessful attempts, Medvedev now has the best chance of winning his first Grand Slam tournament on Sunday.

Medvedev (3): Zverev (6) – 5:7, 3:6, 7:6, 7:6, 6:3
