A Ferrari 250 GTO for $48.4 million

Maranello, August 27, 2018 - A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO has sold for the new, all-time record sum of $48,405,000 at an RM Sotheby's auction in Monterey, California. The figure represents the new record amount for the purchase of a car ever achieved at auction. It surpasses the previous record set in 2014 for the sale of another Ferrari 250 GTO, which changed hands for $38,115,000.

The automobile sold on Sunday is number three of the 36 Ferrari 250 GTOs built and is one of the four models revised by Scaglietti in 1964, when the bodywork developed by Pininfarina was shaped more efficiently from an aerodynamic point of view.

Ferrari 250 GTO is one of the most important and famous cars in the history of the automobile. The first owner of this car, Edorado Lualdi-Gabardi, was one of the most successful private drivers on the track and also in the races. With the 250 GTO he won the Italian hillclimb championship in 1962, while the second owner, Gianni Bulgari, continued the victory in his class and finished fourth overall in the 1963 Targa Florio. The third owner, Corrado Ferlaino, again took the victory in his class and won the fifth place at the Targa Florio of 1964, when the car already presented the modified bodywork.
