World Cup final in Are with surprising winners

The decisions in the downhill discipline
Sofia Goggia needed a win or at least a podium finish to keep her hopes alive of winning the Downhill World Cup. The Italian, who started the race in 9th place, was convincing and took the lead. Lindsey Vonn intervened four bib numbers later in the decision for the crystal globe. She took the top spot with a lead of six hundredths. However, as she was the only skier to finish ahead of Goggia, this did little to help her in terms of the World Cup victory. A difference of just three points made the difference and left the Italian shining as the happy winner of the small crystal globe. It couldn't have been more exciting. Alice McKennis, Lindsey Vonn's teammate, surprisingly made it onto the podium in this race, ahead of Germany's Victoria Rebensburg and Jasmin Flurie, the best skier on the Swiss team.

In the men's race, Beat Feuz achieved a podium finish with a solid run, which also meant the first victory of the downhill World Cup for him. His biggest rival in the fight for the downhill crystal globe, Aksel Lund Svindal, finished fourth. The surprise of the race was the double victory of the two Austrians Vincent Kriechmayr and Matthias Mayer, who were weakening at the Olympic Games.

The decisions at the Super G
One day after his victory in the Downhill, Vincent Kriechmayr doubled up with victory in the Super G and certainly surprised every bookmaker. Christoph Innerhofer was also not expected to finish so far ahead. And this second place compensated the lovable Tyrolean for all the racing bad luck this season. The favorite and this year's winner of the small crystal globe, Kjetil Jansrud, would have been seen a little further ahead, even though the race was very close. Hannes Reichelt, Aksel Lund Svindal and also Thomas Dressen, who again shone with a podium finish in a speed discipline, were all faster than Jansrud.

In the women's event, it was Lara Gut or Tina Weirather who were considered the favorites to win this discipline. Everyone was surprised by the unexpected victory of Sofia Goggia, one day after winning the downhill. Victoria Rebensburg and Lindsey Vonn followed behind. With a gap of more than one second to the winner, Tina Weirather only achieved 7th place and 40 World Cup points. However, these were enough for her to win the small crystal globe, because Lara Gut dropped out after just a few meters with too much risk.
