Wawrinka's surprising surge at the 2013 US Open

Stanislas Wawrinka wins against Andy Murray at the US Open 2013

A topsy-turvy world. What we are currently experiencing is something we have never seen before: Until now, Roger Federer always made it to the finals as the best Swiss and Wawrinka soon had to bow out of the tournament. Now it's the other way around: Federer knocks it out of the respective tournament early and Wawrinka reaches the finals. But what he has done in his last match really takes the cake: he throws Andy Murray, this year's Wimbledon winner, out of the quarterfinal match of the current US Open 2013 in just three sets: an outright sensation! What is going on with Stan? Super! And it's been going well for Wawrinka all year. He reached his best ranking in 2008 with the 9th place on the ATP ranking list, since then it went up and down, but rather down to rank 29 and since this year he starts to climb. Since his final match against Rafael Nadal at the Mutua Madrid Open in May he was again on the 10th rank of the ATP ranking and now he has worked his way up to the 9th rank again. Will his winning streak continue? One small obstacle looms: his semifinal match, which he has now reached, may be against Novak Djokovic, the current No. 1. But if he plays like he did against Murray, anything is possible. His confidence seems clearly boosted and with a bit of luck, who knows. On the other hand, Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet face each other in the semifinals of the US Open, where Nadal is considered the favorite and would be the likely opponent in the final if he wins. This year's final in Madrid would be repeated in such a case, but with what outcome? But Stan is, as usual, very reserved and modest. When asked in an interview with Swiss television after the match whether he wants to win the tournament now, he said: "I don't know, yes, I'm in the semifinals, but I'm not going to tell myself now that I want to win it. I have to take match by match now and if I want to win it, I have to beat Novak Djokovic and then another opponent. For me, it's much more important to keep playing well, keep this level up, keep playing top 10 players and keep going on this way. I take things as they come." One can only keep one's fingers crossed that the likeable Frenchman will succeed in this cabinet piece. It would really turn the Swiss tennis world upside down.
