The great Corona test of ski regions

Corona test ski regions

In which ski regions do which Corona regulations apply? This is the question we are investigating in this report. Where can skiers and snowboarders enjoy their winter vacations this winter and what can they expect in terms of Corona? The pandemic is causing a lot of uncertainty, especially among travelers. We have therefore researched which Corona regulations await arrivals in the respective countries, which must be observed. The comparison should help anyone interested to quickly find their way around and decide on a destination.

The current global Corona pandemic is unsettling all travelers worldwide, not only because of their immediate personal danger, but also because the countries of Europe and the rest of the world do not operate a uniform defense strategy in the fight against the pandemic and therefore each country takes individual measures for its own country in the short term. For travelers, there is a huge lack of transparency as to which country has which conditions, which we want to eliminate somewhat with this report.

Caution short term political changes
Currently, the individual states and federal provinces are deciding, seemingly every minute, to adequately confront the threatening situation of the deadly virus. However, this makes it difficult for citizens to follow the course of the individual country or even the course of the entire world. Sometimes less would be more. Fewer decisions, less hysteria, fewer new regulations and instead more calm and consistency so that people can adjust. Politics, especially in Central Europe, seems to be carried by a certain hysteria and panic, otherwise one cannot explain the ever-changing new regulations of the various countries.

And all because there are not enough hospital beds?
One small point should be mentioned only in passing. The reason given for the drastic measures in Europe is the possible overloading of the healthcare system. Question: Why hasn't the summer been used to expand hospital capacities? As far as I can see, this has hardly happened anywhere. Politicians seem to have simply waited to see whether the second wave would actually come or not and now seem surprised that the experts' forecast has come true. The 2nd wave was already a topic of discussion as soon as the first wave started. Do we want to wait for the 3rd wave again and remain inactive? Everyone seems to be ignoring how crazy the whole thing is. The entire social life, including the economy, is being reduced to zero just because the capacity of intensive care units in the countries is not sufficient. This could also be called mismanagement of the health care system, which citizens and entrepreneurs are now paying dearly for with restrictions on freedom.

War of the systems?
I am not a fan of frivolous conspiracy theories, but if you look at the global political situation of the pandemic critically and not naively, China presents itself as a sovereign social system in dealing with the Corona pandemic, because for some time now the pandemic in China seems to have been "supposedly" completely defeated. Europe and America, on the other hand, simply cannot get rid of the virus. Whoever evaluates this pandemic as a biochemical war against the capitalist system of the West must see the Chinese communist system as the clear winner, which secretly celebrates itself, because China shows the world that it has the virus under control, in contrast, the virus has the Western civilization under control. No glory for the West. And why no politician in the West except the hated American President Donald Trump dares to say critical words against China? It seems Europe's politicians are too corrupt, too cowardly or too weak to stand up to China. Surely the leaders in China must really laugh at that. Any citizen suspected of causing harm or even killing people will face massive legal problems and face a drastic trial as soon as possible, but when a state like China does something like this - it is undisputed that the pandemic originated in China and China has some responsibility for the pandemic and its consequences - there are no consequences. Has the dictatorship of China already entered Europe? If you think about the fact that months ago people could only be seen wearing face masks in Asia, but today they can be seen all over Europs and the rest of the Western world, then the Chinese system has triumphed and imposed its system on the West: depriving people of their freedom and rights and establishing this with dictatorial decisions. If this continues, will we soon be facing a revolt in Europe? The first signs are already there. You can see that more and more people in Italy, Germany, etc. are taking to the streets to protest against the dismantling of the basic constitutional rights that have been fought for over decades in the West and the government decisions that are responsible for this.

Currently belongs to the past - not possible in Corona winter

Closure of the ski resorts
In Europe's political arena, more and more voices are calling for the closure of ski resorts. After the Italian Prime Minister Conte wants to close Italy's ski resorts by the end of January, the German Chancellor Merkel is also tooting the same horn and wants to obtain a closure of the ski resorts for the whole of Europe, but the German Chancellor is Chancellor of Germany and not of Europe.

Austria has already indicated that it will not go along with this. But as a member of the European Union, it will not be able to avoid certain compromises. In the event of ski area closures in individual European countries, Switzerland could emerge as the winner and benefit from European closures, because it is impossible to see how a closure of ski areas is an issue given Switzerland's current policy of avoiding a lockdown at all costs. Certain politicians are really doing too well, especially if they have been working as politicians for a long time. They no longer know what it means to earn and generate the money themselves, they think it grows on the trees, at least their behavior suggests such thinking. They do not seem to be aware of how much they destroy with careless measures, or they do not care. They risk recklessly destroying the prosperity of Europe, which has been laboriously worked for over centuries by millions of people, completely in a few months and years.

Consequences of closing ski resorts
The consequences of a ski area closure could be devastating for the tourism region. Specifically, the ordering states would have to incur further massive debt to compensate the industries that would be affected by the closures. And who would pay for that? What that would mean for the business location cannot even be estimated today, but certainly nothing good. On the other hand, as always, there would be laughing third parties who would profit from the closures. On the one hand, the individual sports, which function independently of the lift facilities, would experience an unimagined boom. Cross-country skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing would experience an unimagined hipe, which are likely to see an increase this winter anyway. On the other hand, those ski resorts that would not be closed and that would become a catch basin for stranded skiers from other European regions would benefit. With such measures, politicians are shooting themselves in the foot!

The measures of the countries and their differences
As we have discovered in our research, the measures taken by the individual countries are very similar. All are based on maintaining distance between people, increasing hygiene, and having people wear masks wherever necessary. Contact tracing and corona testing close the loop. Nevertheless, there are significant differences for travelers, especially with regard to the mask requirement, which again can be handled somewhat differently in all countries and ski resorts, and may discourage one or the other traveler from traveling to the ski region. In order to still keep our comparison clear, we have limited the comparison to mountain railroads, hotels and restaurants in the ski regions and there also only duties and in particular the different handling of the mask obligation examined.

General same measures and differences
No matter which country you look at, everywhere it is important to keep a suitable distance to the next person, to wash your hands regularly and to wet your elbows. For companies everywhere, the instruction is to ensure a hygiene concept for employees and customers, as well as to create a suitable ventilation concept. This is no different for ski resorts. However, differences can be seen in the handling of the mask obligation, the regulations in the hotels and restaurants. Differences are particularly striking when it comes to a money-back guarantee.

The differences between the individual countries
The weakness in the fight against the pandemic is Europe's culture of nation-states and national differences. That is why each country goes its own way, sometimes with more success, sometimes without.

Switzerland
After the experiences with the first lockdown, the government is no longer willing to order a second lockdown, and a lockdown of the ski resorts is currently not an issue at all. Nevertheless, one must fear short-term changes to the disadvantage of the skiers due to the European pressure and the pandemic. Typically, one plans to reduce the transport capacities in order to reduce the accumulations.

Germany
Germany has good values compared to its European friends, yet they are investing in a second lockdown to eradicate the virus. But more and more, massive resistance is emerging among the population. And the state's economic support is now also reaching its limits. The government is really putting the people to the test.

Austria
Austria has always reacted most sharply and very quickly ordered a hard lockdown, and this time is no exception. But when it comes to the topic of skiing vacations, the tourism country shows little willingness to compromise. A lockdown of ski resorts does not seem to be an issue at all at the moment. Nevertheless, one thinks about a lockdown of the hotels and restaurants, whether it comes and how long it lasts, remains to be seen. Also in Austria ongoing course corrections show up, which are directed mostly against the liberty and the enterprises. Poor Austrian tourism!

Italy
At the beginning of the pandemic, Italy was at the top of the list of affected countries in Europe. Carelessness and lack of control, along with a weak healthcare system, led to the disaster. Now they swear by a total lockdown and Europe is to help out again. Italy is closing the ski resorts until at least January 10, 2021 and wants Europe to join in, but the Italians are expecting too much, although the Germans and French are showing solidarity. The people are just as slowly fed up with the eternal restrictions. And whether the South Tyroleans will join in at all is another matter entirely.

France
Despite rigorous measures, France is currently the country most affected by the Corona pandemic. This also shows that mandatory masks and restrictions do not inevitably lead to a reduction in the number of infected persons. It is understandable that the government feels compelled to impose massive personal restrictions in view of the poor figures. Currently, entry into France is not possible. France does not want to close the ski regions, but they do want to close the ski lifts. People should go to the mountains and enjoy the healthy air, but not spread the virus through mass sports. What will they decide next?

Scandinavia
Norway and Finland have been largely spared and are not allowing people from Central Europe or America to enter for the time being. They do not want to import a pandemic. The ski regions are open. Masks are compulsory at most for people who are ill or who have to be quarantined.

From the beginning, Sweden chose a free path without regulations, which was criticized by Europe - envy probably plays a big role. Sweden's government came and still comes under pressure due to the poor Corona case numbers and has to go over the books. Restrictions can no longer be ruled out. But the Swedish way has gained a lot of sympathy, after all the Swedish society has remained largely healthy despite openness and freedom. Masks are currently not an issue in Sweden, as their effectiveness is disputed.

USA & Canada
The USA has also recognized the signs of the times. The pandemic is a reality and that is why in the USA, in some places, even stricter measures prevail in the ski resorts than in Europe. Sometimes a bit exaggerated, but often it is very similar to central Europe. In addition, the individual states decide on these regulations; each state makes its own ordinances. The same is true for Canada, whose provinces decide sovereignly and very locally impose mandatory masks or not, the whole thing seems very targeted.

Overall, the countries under review are taking similar measures, sometimes with striking differences. Compulsory masks are not yet an issue in Scandinavia. For this reason alone, a trip there is worth considering, provided the borders are open at all. Switzerland and France are the most child-friendly countries, with children only having to wear a mask from the age of 12 and 11 respectively. America shows itself to be a bit too rigorous in this point. To prescribe that a 3-year-old must wear a mask, although it is known that infections hardly ever come from children, and certainly not from small children, seems absurd and completely exaggerated to me. Germany's restriction policy often seems exaggerated; above all, one has the impression that Germany is at war and wants to send everyone to war. The German government would do well to show some restraint for once. It is therefore not surprising that such massive protests are taking place in Germany in particular; one can only have understanding for this. Austria seems to be a bit fickle with the young chancellor, he still seems to be too impressionable, especially by "Mutti" from Germany. He should show himself a bit more sovereign and adult and take measures for his country himself. If he closes the hotels in the vacation regions, he not only spoils business for tourism in his home country, but he also submits to German politics. This is a bit too reminiscent of WW2 and the Austrians' obedience to Germany during the war. France and Italy are also relying solely on restriction, And Italy, as so often, hopes that the "others" will pay. But what have they all done in terms of expanding hospitals, intensive care units, bed capacities and the health care system? Probably nothing to nothing at all. That's also a way of screwing the people.

Amazing differences in ski regions
After almost the whole year not a day goes by without talking about the (damned) Corona virus and its spread and which state has taken which measures in the fight against the pandemic, it is all the more surprising how differently the ski regions treat this topic. With the skiing areas in the German Black Forest was to be read sometimes not a single line over the Corona virus and possible measures against it, And such is to be found also in Switzerland, France or Austria, In contrast one showed up in Bavaria very exactly and in detail and sometimes also stringently and not compromising. Davos shows itself very detailed and comprehensive in its treatment of the subject, whereas Lenzerheide did not really mention the mask obligation. Each ski region emphasizes the corona situation and its measures very differently. Even the information about a money-back guarantee, which is important for ski guests, is not always easy to find. On some regional websites, you have to browse really hard until you find an article about it. Certain ski regions seem to have not yet fully arrived at the Corona time and at the specific guest needs. The handling and the information of the vacation guests is so different in the ski regions and their mountain railroads, as one would not actually suspect on the basis of the uniform threat and the clinical picture. For guests, it is more important than ever to inform themselves well before starting the journey, before one does the trip in vain and is annoyed green and blue.

Conclusion
The virologically similar control measures are implemented very differently in the various countries. And the ski regions are again individually differently positioned. This lays the foundation for a great confusion, and this confusion is not getting smaller, but bigger and bigger with always new regulations.

The Scandinavians seem to be the most liberal and are not as masked as the Central Europeans. Hurray for the Scandinavians! At the beginning, it was said in Europe that the mask obligation was controversial and that the mask does not protect you, but only the other person, but in Central Europe they have suddenly turned right around and now it looks in Europe like in Asia. What a defeat! What a disaster! Child-friendly is the way of things in France and Switzerland. Hurray for so much common sense!

The best chances to ski and enjoy ski vacations are currently in Switzerland and Scandinavia. After that comes Austria. Only after that, far behind, come the rest of the countries in Europe, whose next measures are to be feared. What will they decide next? That everyone has to carry a breathing apparatus and a mobile intensive care unit if they want to go on skiing vacations. Or that the luggage and the own car must be taken to a decontamination station after entering the country. Such governments, which make a social war out of a viral catastrophe, under which the people have to suffer additionally, are really not much good in the preservation of a civilized peaceful life. On the other hand, all the other rulers and people who want to and do keep their common sense and support each other in overcoming the crisis are to be congratulated, because they are doing a lot to get out of the crisis soon. To the travel and ski friends out there, one can only recommend to inform oneself again and again about the status quo in the ski region and what requirements one has to fulfill, then the trip will also not become a horror experience, but the hoped-for relaxation that one is looking for and should find in the vacations.

Certainly no one. That's why individual regions and ski resorts have started to offer a money-back guarantee, assuring the guest that in the worst case they would be refunded the money. The provider will certainly do everything to ensure that the trip can take place. But this is not done nationally, but in individual regions and ski resorts or at the respective hotel.
