The ZSC Lions announce their new head coach, Swedish-American dual citizen Rikard Grönborg. Starting this season, he will be at the Lions' helm for the next two years.
Rikard Grönborg joins the ZSC Lions from the Swedish Ice Hockey Association. There he was active at various levels in different functions since 2006: From 2010 as head coach of the U18, from 2013 as head coach of the U20 and finally from 2016 as head coach of the senior national team of Sweden. As head coach, Grönborg has already led the team to two World Cup gold medals, including the 2018 final against Switzerland. The 50-year-old Swedish-American dual citizen will also be behind the Tre Kronor at the upcoming World Championship in Slovakia. Grönborg has already collected numerous medals as head and assistant coach of Sweden's junior national teams: Once gold, four times silver and once bronze with the U20 as well as
twice silver with the U18.
"At the time, Rikard Grönborg was responsible for the training philosophy of the Swedish
Ice Hockey Association and, together with the successes, has had a significant influence on Swedish ice hockey. He has worked excellently with young players in particular and accompanied many on their way from the U18s to the senior national team," says ZSC Lions Sports Director Sven Leuenberger. Grönborg lived in America for 20 years and was involved there as a club coach (college and highest junior league). "Rikard is a North American-influenced coach with clear ideas, strong charisma and very good communication skills," Leuenberger emphasizes. The fact that Grönborg is already very familiar with the Swiss league thanks to his intensive scouting activities is of great significance for
Leuenberger another plus point. It is not yet known who will be the assistant coach of the city of Zurich.
