First Olympic gold in giant slalom for Schiffrin

Mikaela Shiffrin has found her way back to her old form after fluffing in the last World Cup races before the Olympics and people were already starting to talk about a crisis. Unusual mistakes or concentration errors were what cost the American the victory and sometimes meant the end.

But now everything seems to be fine again and she presented herself in top form. She already set the course for victory in the first run by placing second behind Manuela Moelgg. Her biggest opponents Tessa Worley and Victoria Rebensburg weakened. The Frenchwoman fell back to 14th place and the German medal contender had to register a large gap of almost nine tenths.

Unexpected trio on the podium
Tessa Worley convinced everyone with a strong second run, but she could not make up the big gap to Shiffrin and finally finished seventh. Victoria Rebensburg also tried with full risk in the second run to still realize the medal dreams, but she did not quite succeed. She finished fourth behind Federica Brignone, who had already finished the race in third place in the first run and thus won the bronze medal. Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel surprised the spectators and her opponents by winning the silver medal, even though she has shown in the last World Cup races that she has the talent and can go to the podium. After Federica Brignone, Mikaela Shiffrin then started the second last run and this time kept her nerve and increased her lead over Brignone from 0.09 sec. before to 0.46 sec. and won her first gold medal in giant slalom at an Olympics.

Manuala Moelgg could not take advantage of her good starting position and dropped back to eighth place in the second run.

Best Swiss was Wendy Holdener with rank 9, as the best Swedish skier Frida Hansdotter finished the race on rank six and Anna Veith was the most successful skier of the Austrian women's team with rank 12.
