Dakar Rally 2015 - 5th stage

Cars

Carlos Sainz did not manage to repair his defective Peugeot yesterday. For him the race for the victory of the Dakar 2015 came to an end at the 4th stage. Orlando Terranova can also no longer hope for the overall victory with yesterday, maybe a stage win is still in it? A total of 7 vehicles did not make it yesterday and are eliminated from the rally. Nasser Al-Attiyah is in a completely different situation, he dominates the Dakar with his Mini until today, but has to watch out for the South African Giniel de Villiers, who is close on his heels. The Mini driver opens today's stage again.

Brutal Dakar
Frenchman Guerlain Chicherit has to experience how brutal the Dakar Rally can be when his car catches fire and, despite successfully extinguishing the fire, gives up the ghost after a further three kilometers.

While the Dutchman Ten Brinke loses about a quarter of an hour after he is forced to stop at kilometer 187 and Cyril Despres also has to fight with mechanical problems, the Russian Vladimir Vasilyev, who is currently in 11th place overall, reaches checkpoint 1 first. Dakar debutant Yazeed Alrajhi, currently in third place, also knows how to show faultless performance and passes checkpoint 1 with the second best time. Emiliano Spataro on Renault Duster is in fifth place after 229 km. On the other side, Cyril Despres has been standing still for 1.5 hours, struggling with mechanical problems. Meanwhile, the Russian Vasilyev can extend his lead and is 3'26 minutes ahead of his nearest rival after 370 km. The closest rival of leader Al-Attiyah, Giniel de Villiers, is involved in a race accident and will lose time today. In the end, Al-Attiyah crosses the finish line first, but the fastest of the day is Vladimir Vasilyev. Very close behind is Saudi Yazeed Alrajhi thanks to steady performance. In third place is Robby Gordon, who had a good day for once today, and Stéphane Peterhansel can also be satisfied. The Peugeot driver delivered a solid performance and drove to fifth place.

Bikes

There are still 131 riders in the race, 8 riders had to say goodbye to the Dakar yesterday, including Sam Sunderland, who broke his shoulder after a mistake at kilometer 66 of the 4th stage. The leader Joan Barreda starts today's race at 9:30 am. Marc Coma follows two minutes later.

Only 34 km after the start, Jordi Viladoms and Ruben Faria make a fatal mistake. They choose a wrong route and run the risk of losing a lot of time, but thanks to their experience they find their way back to the right route a few minutes later.

Pablo Quintanilla, thanks to his good knowledge of the region, manages to gain a lead of 1 minute over Marc Coma and 3 minutes over Joan Barreda at checkpoint 1. Stefan Svitko on KTM also draws attention after passing checkpoint 1 14 seconds faster than Quintanilla. Can the 11th-placed rider maintain this performance? After Marc Coma has passed checkpoint 1 in fourth place, the Spaniard increases the pace once again and gains an advantage over Barreda and Quintanilla. He saves this lead until the finish of the stage, which he decides for himself. Impressively, Pablo Quintanilla finishes the stage in third place.
