No sooner have we reported the elimination of favorites at the US Open 2023 than last year's finalist Casper Ruud surprisingly flies out of the tournament. The world number 5 was beaten by the number 67, the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang. Thus another top favorite stumbles over an unknown player. The death of the favorites continues.
We can continue philosophizing where we left off yesterday. What is it about such big tournaments or what is it about the supposed favorites that makes them fall down in rows? Now it has hit last year's finalist, the Norwegian Casper Ruud, the current number 5 in the world rankings. The Chinese Zhizhen Zhang obviously had nothing to lose and served fearlessly and decisively, landing clear winners. Yes, of course, what does Zhang have to lose? If he risks everything and loses, it is no shame to lose against the number 5 in the world, but if he wins, it is a triumph. Accordingly, he was aggressive and risked a lot, hitting his shots or running to the net to score with a volley, but then he also scored and increasingly unsettled Ruud. The result was an up and down match. Each player took one set at a time. But when Ruud won the fourth set (6:0), one had to think that this was it for the Chinese player. But far from it, Zhang managed to break Ruud and took a 5:2 lead in the fifth and last set, unstoppable for Ruud. In the end, Zhang won the fifth set 6:2 and with it the match and the move to the third round of the US Open 202. For Ruud, this is unfortunately the end of the last Grand Slam of the year.
