Brazilian Henrique Avancini takes his second UCI Mountain Bike World Championship marathon title with a brilliant ride in Scotland on Sunday. The 34-year-old Avancini from Petrópolis - who has won XCC and XCO UCI MTB World Cup races since 2018 and took silver in the short course (XCC) at the 2021 UCI MTB World Championships in Val di Sole - was just three seconds behind German Lukas Baum at the first big split.
The riders tackled 96.5 km with 3,200 meters of elevation gain through five forests and Avancini took the lead until the next intermediate time, while Baum was seven seconds behind and Swiss rider Alexandre Balmer was third before Czech rider Martin Štosek caught up with them at the last intermediate time. Although Štosek fought hard to keep up with Avancini's pace, the Brazilian used all his experience and his formidable "engine" to win by 28 seconds over Baum, who was covered in mud.
