Shimano launches new 105 Di2 group

Just in time for the 40th anniversary of its market launch in 1982, SHIMANO gives the successful 105 group the ultimate upgrade with the introduction of electronic Di2 shifting technology at this level. In doing so, the long-awaited SHIMANO 105 R7100 group not only makes Di2 performance accessible to a significantly larger circle of road cyclists, it also offers the wireless, reliable and easy-to-use electronic 12-speed shifting technology, with which SHIMANO has recently set new standards, in an even more affordable package.

Road cyclists who previously had to rely on mechanical shifting technology can now also enjoy the functionality and technology with which SHIMANO has caused a sensation in the past year with the market launch of the latest DURA-ACE and ULTEGRA generations. The SHIMANO 105 Di2 is the result of years of research and development. Out came precise, flawless switching function, precisely matched ratios and a reliable braking system, which are unparalleled at this price level.

SHIMANO 105 Di2: Science of Speed

After the revolutionary electronic Di2 technology (Digital Integrated Intelligence) already caused a sensation in 2009 when it was first launched on the market, this latest Di2 version from SHIMANO is characterized by significant functional advancements, including a wire-less cockpit and the expansion to a 12-speed system. However, the SHIMANO engineers made no compromises with regard to the fast, precise and reliable shifting function that road cyclists have always and quite rightly expected from SHIMANO. As before, the shifting is quite simple and consistent - over and over again.

Advanced Di2 platform
The completely newly developed Di2 system guarantees fast shifting with a wireless cockpit.

Modern powertrain
Optimized 12-speed gradations provide unparalleled efficiency and seamless shifting.

Improved interface, optimized ergonomics
With a fine-tuned balance of comfort, aerodynamics and aesthetics, the SHIMANO 105 Di2 guarantees safe and comfortable ergonomics and allows a clean look in the cockpit area.

Improved braking system
In addition to improved brake control, the new SHIMANO 105 braking system features reduced noise and easy maintenance and care.

New carbon wheels
In the new tubeless carbon wheels find aerodynamics, stiffness, low weight and attractive price in the ideal ratio together.

SHIMANO 105 Di2: Hybrid system

The SHIMANO 105 relies on a hybrid system of a wireless connection of the cockpit components and a cable connection between the rear derailleur, front derailleur and the central battery, usually housed in the seat tube, which ensures maximum reliability under all conditions. And just like its big siblings DURA-ACE and ULTEGRA, the SHIMANO 105 also shines with extensive options for quickly and easily adapting it to the rider's wishes and preferences via the E-TUBE app.

Using E-TUBE PROJECT, the shifting system can be configured individually, for example by setting the shifting speed, the number of shifts when the button is held down, or the synchro-shift and semi-synchro-shift functionality accordingly.

In addition, the system can be paired with many third-party bike computers, including Garmin and Wahoo. For example, the currently engaged gear or the battery charge status can be displayed on these devices.

SHIMANO 105 Di2: Optimized lever ergonomics

The shift-brake levers of the new SHIMANO 105 are characterized by unparalleled ergonomics, in the development of which not least the feedback of numerous professional racers was taken into account. Higher drawn horns and an optimized lever shape provide more comfort and better control in any riding position. The braking function also undergoes a significant upgrade with the new, smooth brake levers and the extended control range.

Even at 105 level, the new Di2 levers use SHIMANO's proprietary circuitry, which ensures safe, fast signal transmission and processing, while reducing power requirements to an absolute minimum. This reduces the risk of malfunctions and interference, further reduces the switching speed and extends the battery life. The use of a central rechargeable battery, securely housed in the frame, simplifies recharging and guarantees a stable and reliable

SHIMANO 105 Di2: Advanced shifting system

With the step up to 12-speed, the SHIMANO 105 has the light and heavy gears that road cyclists expect at this level, but at the same time is characterized by pleasantly small gear jumps between these two extremes. Responsible for this are in particular the cassette options with 11-34 and 11-36 teeth and the cranksets with gradations of 50-34 and 52-36 teeth. In combination, they even allow a reduction in the drivetrain, so that steeper ramps and longer climbs can be conquered effortlessly. In addition, these optimized components guarantee a more efficient use of one's physical resources, as the smaller gear steps make it possible to always pedal in an ideal cadence range.

With regard to the wheels, the new system is downward compatible. So previous road wheels with 11-speed freewheel hub can also be used with the new 12-speed SHIMANO 105 Di2 further.

SHIMANO 105 Di2: Improved braking system

As with the recent DURA-ACE and ULTEGRA groups, the new SHIMANO 105 has received a revised and improved braking system, which shines with lower noise, and simplified maintenance and makes braking operations more powerful and more controllable. Despite the larger pad spacing in the rest position, which significantly reduces the noise level, the brakes grip quickly and reliably. Hobby screwdrivers will particularly appreciate the clean and simple bleeding process, which no longer requires the brake caliper to be removed from the frame.

New RS710 carbon wheels

In addition to the shifting and braking components SHIMANO presents for the market launch of the 105 Di2 for the first time also two new carbon wheels at this price level. Once again SHIMANO's tradition of adopting technologies from the top series step by step on subordinate product levels proves itself. The C32, specifically geared to uphill performance, as well as the all-round model C46 are characterized by the same DNA that makes the corresponding C36 and C50 wheelsets at DURA-ACE and ULTEGRA so attractive -in particular, the balanced ratio of aerodynamics, low weight and stiffness.

The C32 model has a 32 mm high rim with an inner width of 21 mm; the target weight is 1,502 g. The rim in the C46 wheelset is 46 mm high, also has an inner width of 21 mm and is expected to bring 1'610 g. Both non-group wheelsets are both 11-speed and 12-speed compatible, Tubeless ready and are provided with a neutral, appealing SHIMANO logo.

1 thought on “Shimano lanciert neue 105 Di2-Gruppe”

  1. The article is informative, but also very uncritical. My critical view relates to the price development. Of course, innovation must also be paid for. The developers have done a great job and it is great that we hobby racing cyclists can use such technology, no question.
Everyone must know whether he wants to afford this luxury, or can. Carbon bikes with electronic circuit, Sram or Shimano now start at 6,000 €. I'm curious to see where the price goes.
I have now also bought my first bike with el. SRAM circuit and am thrilled. They are true works of art and it is a pleasure...
