Dakar Rally 2015 - Stage 2

Cars

After Al-Attiyah had to give up the victory of the first stage due to the penalty transfer, the Argentine leader Terranova starts the second stage. The "Princess of the Dakar Rally" Annie Steel, best female rider in 2010, has changed category. After five years on a bike, she is competing this year in a Desert Warrior Buggy and ended up in 127th place in the first stage. After about 200 km, Nasser Al-Attiyah is leading, leaving his teammate Orlando Terranova 28 seconds behind at the second checkpoint. The two Mini cars dominate the Dakar Rally. Robby Grodon from the USA cannot use his excellent second starting position for the second stage. He has to fight with his brakes, which have an overheating problem and a lot of time falls victim to it. In the end he loses a good 4 hours and falls back to 50th place. But typical of the Americans, he does not lose faith in his chances so quickly: "Everyone will have problems in this Dakar. I lost 4 hours, but it's only the second stage of the race, my chances are not lost yet, no way"! For Nani Roma it's another difficult day, he reaches the first checkpoint in 42nd position. Towards the end of the race Orlando Terranova goes off the track and loses about 20 minutes and with it the prospect of keeping the lead. 11-time Tour winner Stéphane Peterhansel struggles with the gears and loses a good hour. The former Polish ski jumper Adam Malysz is unfortunate: 35 km before the finish his buggy catches fire and has to be left burning.

Bikes

After his excellent first day, Sam Sunderland also starts the second stage of the Dakar Rally in first place followed by Marc Coma, Paulo Gonçalves, Joan Barreda and Alain Duclos. Every year, another nation joins the ranks. In 2015, Santosh Chunchunguppe Shivashankar on KTM is the first rider from India to join the Dakar Rally and he is doing well, currently in 50th place. Joan Barreda has moved into the lead at the first checkpoint, while yesterday's winner Sunderland is a few seconds behind. In his first Dakar Rally participation, Australian Toby Price is impressing, already in fourth place of the field at checkpoint 1, to be in fifth place at the end of the day. The Portuguese Ruben Faria on KTM, who finished the 2013 rally in second place, is one of the favorites of the race and knows how to convince with a good race and third place despite shoulder problems and pain that go back to a broken collarbone in November. From the third checkpoint Barreda steps on the gas and manages to distance Coma. Under the pressure of the two seems to suffer yesterday's winner Sunderland, who loses sight of the ideal route and suddenly finds himself 6 km off the correct route. It takes him two hours to get back on track and, thanks to the mishap, he finds himself in 72nd place at the end, a bitter setback after yesterday's triumphant start. At the end of the day, the winner of the stage and new leader of the peloton is determined: Joan Barreda.

Quads

In the "four-wheeled bikes" the field is quite clear and the riders are relatively stable. Ignacio Casale steps on the gas again and tries to extend his lead, which he manages flawlessly until the second checkpoint. With a superride on the last section of the race, second-placed Rafal Sonik is able to clearly distance the leaders Casale and Lafuente and take over the top of the standings with a lead of 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

Trucks

The field starts already slightly reduced, after yesterday already three drivers have given up: Chilean Luis Eguiguren with his Foton and Italian Michele Cinotto with his Audi in the Cars category and Dutchman Jans Adolphus Leonardus with his Truck will no longer participate. The trucks will drive on a different route than the vehicles in the other categories. The winner of 2013, the Russian Eduard Nikolaev seems to want to know it, after his 7th place on the 1st stage and takes the lead after about half of the distance with an advantage of about 14 seconds over the Belarusian Siarhei Viazovich, whom he distances to 46 seconds at the end.
