Duplantis set a new world record at the Mondo Classic, clearing 6.31 meters in the pole vault. The Swedish star thrilled his home crowd in Uppsala with his 15th world record.
Armand “Mondo” Duplantis set his 15th world record in the men’s pole vault on Thursday evening at his own indoor event, the Mondo Classic in Uppsala, Sweden. In front of his Swedish club fans, he achieved an incredible jump of 6.31 meters.
Duplantis set his last world record outdoors in Tokyo last September with an impressive jump of 6.30 meters, winning his third consecutive pole vault title at the 2025 World Athletics Championships. The US-born Swede, who competes for his mother Helena's home country, has not lost a major final since the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha – an impressive run of success.
He went into yesterday's competition with the goal of setting his second world record on Swedish soil – after his jump of 6.28 meters on June 15th of last year in Stockholm. He used a new 22-step approach technique that he had barely practiced.
Competing against young Greek talents like Emmanouil Karalis, two-time world champion Sam Kendricks, and the promising Norwegian Sondre Guttormsen, Duplantis initially cleared the bar at 5.65 meters. On his next attempt, he cleared 5.90 meters on his first try, along with four other pole vaulters. However, only Guttormsen managed to clear 6 meters on his third attempt, while Kendricks, his compatriot Zachery Bradford, and the Australian Kurtis Marshall failed.
After Guttormsen missed all three attempts at 6.08 m, Duplantis cleared the bar with ease and won the competition. He then immediately moved on to a new best mark of 6.31 m, which he also cleared on his first attempt, securing his first world record in front of a home crowd. His 15th world record in front of a sold-out IFU Arena at the age of just 26 is an impressive achievement, adding to his six world championship titles (indoor and outdoor), two Olympic gold medals, and three coveted World Athlete of the Year awards.
He explained: “This is my home. This means so much to me. Every time I’m on the track, I’m representing myself, my family, and you. I’m so proud to be able to do this in front of you.”
His father and coach Greg revealed: “Mondo is a good runner, and the 22 steps give him the opportunity to use his speed. I think he will jump much higher.”
