Where is there enough snow? Many tourists head to the mountains for skiing during the Christmas and New Year holidays. But at the moment, the snowpack seems a bit thin in some places. We'll tell you the current snow depths for the various ski resorts.
Almost 10 years ago, "Snow shortage" was a real issue. There were practically green winters, during which even the Alpine Ski World Cup struggled to hold its races because some ski resorts simply didn't have enough snow. At that time, numerous ideas emerged about how to produce and store skis before the winter season to ensure sufficient snow for the slopes during the winter season. The problem was attributed to global warming. Probably rightly so. But the climate and planet Earth operate on a completely different timescale than humans. Humans lack the holistic perspective from the planet's point of view. In recent years, despite ongoing global warming, snowfall has returned to normal. Instead, they had to contend with unprecedented floods, droughts, huge fires and similar natural disasters.
The current situation in Switzerland and Europe isn't bad. Snow fell early, and there is snow, but many skiers and snowboarders who have been on the slopes are reporting a thin snowpack that gets progressively thinner towards the valley floor. At some ski resorts, the valley runs are closed due to the lack of snow. We've therefore briefly checked the situation and provide an overview of snow depths and slope conditions in various ski areas across Europe.

This is the current snow situation around the turn of the year 2025/2026 in Central Europe. How the situation will develop is unpredictable, although it's generally true that snow falls, especially in February, but of course, this isn't something one can rely on. At the moment, there's enough snow for skiing and snowboarding, even if you sometimes have to forgo the downhill run. If everything continues as it has in recent years, there will be more snow. And the Italians, who will be hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo in February, certainly need it. There's nothing left to do but wait and see.
