Tom Dumoulin skips the Tour de France

Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin will miss the cycling highlight of the year, the Tour de France. Although he tried to recover as quickly as possible after his serious crash at the Giro d'Italia in order to take part in the Tour de France, he now has to admit to himself that he is not in the best possible physical shape to be able to compete in three tough weeks at the Tour de France.

The whole recovery period went through ups and downs, but until the end there was hope for a full recovery, but now the decision has been made to give the 28-year-old the time he needs to recover from a very difficult time.

Tom said, "The last month has been extremely difficult overall with setbacks in knee recovery. After what happened at the Giro, I really wanted to try for the Tour de France, but this week I realized that it's just not realistic for my level to be in shape in time there. I've been trying so hard to get there, but I really need to listen to my body and free myself from chasing an unrealistic goal."

Team Sunweb doctor Anko Boelens explained, "Tom was trying very hard to be ready in time for the Tour and he tried everything he could, but now the decision has matured that it's just not possible. We trusted in the recovery, the process of recovery and the gradual return to racing, but as with any recovery, there were setbacks. Time is no longer on our side to deal with setbacks, so giving Tom the time he needs to get fit again can only be the right decision. Despite his strong will and ambition to compete in the Tour de France, it's better to drop that goal this year in favor of optimal recovery."
