Shimano Steps becomes even more individual

NOW WITH ADJUSTABLE ECO MODE

With the new firmware version 3.4.3 available since today, SHIMANO STEPS E-MTB systems (E8000 and E7000) can now also be set to "High", "Medium" or "Low" Eco mode in addition to Boost and Trail modes. This makes SHIMANO STEPS E-Mountain bikes even more versatile and allows the rider to find the perfect setting to achieve more range or extra power depending on preference.

SHIMANO STEPS E-MTB systems offer three predefined settings to choose from for different riding characteristics:

  1. Dynamic is the factory setting where the Boost mode is set to "High", the Trail mode to "Low" and the Eco mode again to "High". The high setting of the Boost mode provides maximum support to cope with terrain with challenging climbs, the low set Trail mode guarantees optimum control in tricky technical passages, but still full support when pedaling hard. Finally, the Eco mode set to high provides a good balance of range and driving fun.

2. in the Explorer setting, both the boost and trail modes are set to "Medium". It gives a feeling of the higher speeds through the drive support, but at the same time with a high degree of control in technical riding situations. The Eco mode is also set here to "High" to provide adequate support in any terrain, especially when exploring unknown trails and tours.

3. the Custom Setting finally allows Boost, Trail and Eco mode to be configured individually and to choose between "High", "Medium" and "Low" for each of these modes. This allows the right setup to be found for every riding style, for every terrain and for all individual preferences. For example, let's say you have to ride on a rainy day with a heavy backpack over relatively flat forest trails. Then the Boost mode on "Low" provides enough support for the flat profile, optimal traction on the wet surface ensures "Low" also for the trail mode and the Eco mode in the "High" setting creates the compensation for the high weight. In addition, the custom settings are quite practical when different people are traveling together and can thus adapt the driving characteristics of their wheels to each other so that nothing stands in the way of a harmonious tour in the group.

And the best thing about it is: The selection and configuration of modes and settings is as simple as can be: It can be done conveniently via cable connection to the PC or, as of today, also wirelessly via Bluetooth using a tablet or smartphone app (E-TUBE PROJECT). In this way, the e-bike can be individually adjusted not only at home, but even on the trail.

After the "High", "Medium" and "Low" settings in the custom setting could be selected so far already for the Boost and the Trail mode, these are now also available for the Eco mode:

  • Eco - "High": This is the factory setting that provides noticeable assistance power for dynamic driving or higher loads with sufficient range.
  • Eco - "Medium": This setting guarantees the best balance between range and assistance power and provides a natural riding experience.
  • Eco - "Low": This is the setting for maximum range. If you value the physical training effect when cycling and still want a little support for climbs or when there is a headwind, this setting is ideal.

Jeroen Van Vulpen, E-Bike Brand Manager at SHIMANO Europe explains: "We see that e-mountain bikes are used in many different ways in many countries. That's why we thought about how we could offer all these people the opportunity to adjust their e-bike to their individual needs. Some primarily need tight power because they ride predominantly in hilly terrain, while others value maximum range. With the new option of also being able to set the Eco mode individually, the SHIMANO STEPS system can now be adapted even more precisely to the requirements of each individual in terms of support, characteristics and range."

The firmware update that enables the Eco Mode setting has recently been made available for PC and, as of today, also for tablet and smartphone.
