Players need to be more responsible with Covid-19

The new ice hockey season in Switzerland, which started late on October 1, 2020 anyway due to Corona, has barely begun and already infections of ice hockey players are leading to the quarantine of entire teams. If there is not more discipline here, a specially created ice hockey lockdown threatens.

Only a few days ago it became known that four players of the National League club HC Fribourg-Gottéron are infected with Corona, which led to the quarantine of the entire club and the cancellation of various games. HC Lugano also reported a case and now players of the GCK Lions of the Swiss League are again infected by the evil. This is annoying in every respect. On the one hand, one can be bothered by the imposed quarantine, but above all, I am bothered by the fact that it is mainly young people who are blithely participating in the emergence of the second Corona wave. It is understandable that they do not take the disease so seriously, after all, they are "hardly" or only to a small extent affected by severe courses and deaths, but what they have not understood that they thereby also "innocent people" with the fall into ruin, because the consequences are drastic measures for the private freedom of citizens and in sports, of course, the fans.

Players must show more responsibility
One can have 100% understanding that young people do not want to keep to the Corona rules, but with the nevertheless very expensively paid athletes of high-carat sports clubs like those of the National League and Swiss League the fun simply stops once. The players of such clubs collect gladly once CHF 700'000 / year as salary, thus a multiple of a manager's salary, such people must show themselves thus also exemplary and leadership strength and in times of Corona such players, even if they are young and have no desire on Corona rules, must take responsibility and hold back with celebrating and going out, because the players already endangered by their journeys may not infect themselves unnecessarily by careless behavior, the threatening wage is then the end of the games and the league. In addition, the start with the lockdown of the league and major events due to the rising Corona case numbers is already threatening again.

Those responsible for the sports clubs must also take firm action and not simply let this misconduct pass. Especially where it is recognized that such infections have come about through laissez-faire and carelessness, players must be seriously admonished and threatened with tangible consequences; after all, the clubs and the leagues depend on a functioning game plan. When players ruin it through carelessness, it is ruinous.

It is to be hoped now really that now not row by row clubs buckle, but just that such showcase clubs show the fans how it goes and not vice versa. If further contagions and quarantines are avoided on the part of the clubs, then this will be a great ice hockey season, otherwise there is the threat of a super gau and no one who lives from the sport can want that.
