Formula 1 - Italian Grand Prix 2014

Lewis Hamilton wins the Formula 1 race in Monza ahead of Nico Rosberg and Felipe Massa after his stablemate made a major mistake.

Like Rosberg at the race in Spa, pole man Lewis Hamilton was to suffer the same fate at Monza. As soon as the red lights went out, he wanted to pull away, but he couldn't really get away. Rosberg and Massa passed him, and Hamilton found himself in fourth place. Lurking directly behind was Sebastian Vettel, who had started from eighth place. Bottas, who was third in qualifying, was initially pushed through to tenth in the second Williams. Rosberg therefore managed to drive away from the front and build up a gap to the rest of the field. On lap 9, however, Nico Rosberg braked for the first time and lost some of his advantage over Hamilton. On lap 10, the Briton caught Massa and moved up to second place. By the halfway point of the 306.72 kilometer race, however, Hamilton was no longer able to make any decisive headway on his German rival. The risk of damaging the tires before the only change was too great. Then the tire change: Rosberg came in first. He had no problems. One lap later it was Hamilton's turn. The Briton's crew didn't make any mistakes either. But it wasn't enough to turn into the first corner ahead of Rosberg. Hamilton was told to stay in Rosberg's slipstream. But he didn't have to wait long for an opportunity to overtake: Rosberg braked and missed the chicane, driving back onto the track through the emergency exit. Hamilton, who was close behind, was now able to elegantly pass the German. The Briton easily defended his position to the finish. Vettel, on the other hand, was once again beaten by Ricciardo shortly before the end. Third place went to Felipe Massa in the Williams ahead of his teammate Valtteri Bottas. For Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, the home race ended prematurely: The two-time world champion retired after half the race distance.
