Dakar 2019: the fight through the deserts of Peru

Almost in secret and far from the events of the civilized world, numerous adventurers are once again taking part in the Dakar Rally, which will be held exclusively in Peru in 2019. There are the usual suspects as well as numerous unnamed drivers who make up the speeding throng through the desert sands. After Argentina, Chile and Bolivia canceled their participation this year, the organizer Amaury Sport (ASO) is considering returning to Africa next year.

137 motorcyclists, 36 quad pilots, 100 car racers, 30 SxS drivers and 41 truckers have been torturing their way through sand, mud and sharp rocks in Peru's high plateaus since January 6, 2019, to prove to themselves and the world that they are the last adventurers and survivors on earth. Those who don't have a giant troop can quickly find themselves in a roadside ditch, hundreds of meters at the foot of a dune or in a riverbed with a broken axle, a boiling engine or a blown tire. Of course, numerous helpers and drivers help in case of an emergency, but if you are unlucky, you may have to wait a few hours in sweltering heat for rescue. This is the risk you take when you risk your life on a speeding vehicle through naked nature in the middle of nowhere, far from civilization.

Since the start of the legendary race on the South American continent, hardly any notice has been taken of the unique event in Europe. Big media hardly lose a line, which is a pity. This is not the only reason why the French organizer Amaury Sport (ASO) must seriously consider going back to its beginnings and starting the race in Paris as in the past in order to race through the African continent to Dakar. After all, the air is getting thin now that three South American countries have dropped out. But that does not detract from the spectacle. Dakar remains Dakar!
