No sooner has it been announced that Sebastian Vettel will be leaving the team than his successor is named. It is the Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who currently still drives for the McLaren team, but from the 2021 season he will drive for Scuderia Ferrari for at least two years.
Mattia Binotto, Managing Director Gestione Sportiva and Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari comments as follows:
"I am delighted to announce that Carlos will join Scuderia Ferrari from the 2021 championship. Having already completed five seasons, Carlos has proven himself to be very talented and has shown that he has the technical skills and the right characteristics to make him an ideal fit in our family. We have started a new cycle with the goal of returning to the top in Formula 1. It will be a long road that will not be without difficulties, especially given the current financial and regulatory situation, which is suddenly changing and requires us to approach this challenge differently than in the recent past. We believe that a driver with the talent and personality of Charles and Carlos, the youngest of the last fifty years of the Scuderia, will be the best possible combination to help us achieve the goals we have set ourselves."
Carlos Sainz #55 comments on his change as follows:
"I am very happy that I will be driving for Scuderia Ferrari in 2021 and I am looking forward to my future with the team. I still have an important year ahead of me at McLaren Racing, and I'm really looking forward to racing with McLaren Racing again this season."
Carlos was born in Madrid on September 1, 1994, and already has plenty of Formula One experience, having participated in 102 Grands Prix of the World Championship in five seasons. In 2019 he finished sixth in the Drivers' World Championship, his best result so far, in a year in which he also stood on the podium for the first time, finishing third in Brazil.
