Australian Open 2015: Wawrinka makes it to the semifinals

For the Swiss defending champion, another important hurdle has been cleared: in today's quarterfinals, he defeats the Japanese and number 5 in the ATP world rankings Nei Nishikori clearly in the first three sets with 6:3, 6:4 and 7:6. The always exciting and hard-fought match between the two can be decided in favor of the Swiss today. From the outside, it can be seen as a successful revenge for Wawrinka's defeat at the US Open 2014, in whose quarterfinals the Swiss lost to the Japanese after 5 sets. Currently the score between the two is 3:1 for Wawrinka, i.e. Wawrinka has won three of the four encounters between the two so far, including today's match. Now "Stan" will meet his last year's quarterfinal opponent, the Serb and current world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, whom Wawrinka was able to defeat in a cracking match just over a year ago. Although the statistics of the previous encounters speak with 3:19 in favor of the Serb, who just clearly beat the Swiss at the Mubadala World Championships with 6:1 and 6:2, the statistics do not tell the whole story. If Wawrinka is mentally in the shape he was last year - and he currently feels good - he can also defeat a strong Djokovich and move into the final. It will be exciting!
